I have been contributing to the X5 has the worst A/C thread as well.
I just checked with that online BMW VIN decoder site, and it shows my new 2017 35d is the Hot Climate version and it has window sun protection glazing (cannot believe this, as this X5d and my "17 X5 40e glass is so hot in any sun). I too have never experienced worse A/C than in my 2 F15s. A/C is cold, very cold...but it will just not pump enough air (strength). The only other BMW that I have had with awful A/C was my 2006 E90 330i. My god, that A/C was even worse than the F15!! When driving, I feel I spend most of the drive fiddling with the vents to even get some cold air to hit my face (vents on the far left and right are both "dribblers") Sad. I can turn off rear Climate via iDrive, but then the rear seats stay so hot! BIG problems with the F15....glass is not UV like on Range Rover, Lexus, and even most Fords and the fan blower on the BMW is anemic!! LOVE, LOVE my X5...but the A/C is dreadful!!! |

Mine gets cold enough. Even on Max or non-auto, manual/recirculate, however, my main peeve is it's almost impossible to direct the air to my face. When it's hot (I live in FL) I want that damn air to blast at my face so I don't faint while I, or the car, cools down. I never had a car like this. The 2020 better be better.

New AC condenser!!
Looks like my AC Condenser failed and needs to be replaced....$1400
On a 2015 that originally cost $70k, I'm expecting better. Apparently a seal has failed. I owned a ford for 10+ years and it never once had an issue with the AC. Anyone else have this issue?? |

FYI, I 100% agree with OP, and I just had my car in for service and they changed the air filter too. It's not a clogging issue, the AC in our cars just sucks ass. It's not just the lack of volume and air speed, but also the temp of the air coming out.
In my 2006 M3, the air is very strong, and still ice cold, 13 years later. My wife's 2014 Grand Cherokee - ditto, the car cools down in like 5 min. My X5 doesn't keep up well at all with New Orleans summers. And BTW, I have 30% tint all around, AND I used a windshield guard too, all in efforts to keep the car cool.

A/C Expert
Possible problems I am hearing start with the cabin air filter being clogged and restricting airflow. Other problems are that closing vents usually would not help the problem unless they are blowing on the windshield or floor. Many vehicles default to blowing on the windshield if there is a mode problem. A perfect working refrigeration circuit will not make the vehicle comfortable if the air is being blown on the windshield or floor. Another possible problem is the water control valves are not completely stopping the flow of water to the heater core. When you need maximum cooling even a very small flow of hot coolant can greatly affect the vent temperature. If your interior temperature sensors are not accurate switching to low or max A/C ignores that sensor.
