20" 469M Owners: How bad is the brake dust?
I'm about to pull the trigger on our M Sport now, just trying to figure out the last items we want for our build. We have an X3 35i Sport with the 309 wheels now, and they dust like crazy! It takes me about an hour to handwash the X3 from start to finish, 30 minutes of this is spent getting all the brake dust off the 309 wheels!
Our salesman says that BMW has improved this, but I'm highly skeptical. We plan on ordering our X5 with the 469Ms, so my question for all you owners out there is how badly do the brakes dust? Note that this wouldn't stop me from getting the 469Ms -- for $950 that's a no-brainer. But my wife wants them to be powder-coated so the wheels don't look dirty within 2-3 days of driving like our current 309s do. I've seen this done well, and badly, so I'm not convinced we should go this route if the brakes really don't dust that badly. Our salesman says they can do this at the dealership (they ship the wheels to a shop in Dallas), I'm still waiting to see how much they'll charge to do it though. |

Have only had ours on the car since last Tuesday but have done a fair amount of driving since (maybe 200 miles or so), nothing unusual so far.

I have not noted any significance in brake dust on my M-SportD with the 469's. This is coming from my last BMW being a 2011 M-Sport 3-Series. To me the pads are about the same if not a little better from a dust perspective. The 2011 3's pads were a huge improvement over my 2003 M3.
Personally, I think BMW is making the pad compounds harder so they last longer and the low dust is a side benefit. |

Yes the thread is 469 wheels & brake dust.
I do not have 469. Tip that I learned to reduce the accumulation of b/dust. Wax the wheels, not the wheel lugs. The smooth surface seems to reduce the accumulation of b/dust and whatever small amount that does stick is easier to remove than with "no wax". |

My previous car had a lot of brake dust and I hated washing each spoke one by one, not to miss any brake dust patches when I washed my car. It was laborious and time consuming. So, in preparation of getting my F15, I found a wheel cleaner (spray and wash) that was recommended by Brian Cooley from CNET on Cars. He pretty much said it does wonders cleaning the wheels. I say "he pretty much said" because I've yet to use it. That is how little brake dust is on my 469M wheels. Sure, I still wash my wheels when I wash my car, but it is no where near as detailed as I use to do it with my previous car.
