New Rotors and Pads for my X5M

When my F85 X5M was in the shop getting new rear bags, I noticed that my rear pads were about 25% very thin. And my front pads weren't much better at 40%. I know that I needed to change everything, as my rotors had a visible lip on them and very wavy. So today, I decided to have them changed out at Benz Elite Automotive in Fairfax, VA. I have been going to them for more that 10 years now, and they provide me with excellent service at a fair price. I had these rotor and pads sitting around, for about two years knowing that I would be needing them sooner or later. The old rear pads were very thin, and needed to be changed, and the front weren't much better. But I changed them to Carbon Ceramic pads, and now I don't have to deal with the brake dust anymore. I have had Carbon Ceramics on my E63 AMG for about two years, and dust is a thing of the past. The one thing that I realized, is that my vehicle doesn't have a electrical actuator on the rear caliper. I uses the same setup as my E63, that has brake shoes housed inside rotor hub. So we didn't need any fancy computer to release it. The only thing now, is how to reset the front and rear maintenance in the instrument cluster and MMI. We hooked up a diagnostic computer but couldn't release the service indicators for either.

If anyone has a clue, please enlighten me.

I would pay money to have the rotor hats stay as clean as they are when new. They look SO good new.

Sorry if I'm asking the obvious but you did change the sensors with the pads? If you didn't and you were below 50% that could be your isssue.

No special diagnostics required to reset, just full ignition on the push and hold the trip reset button and after maybe 10 seconds a reset for the first cbs item due should come up saying reset possible, then either push it again to move on to the next cbs item or press and hold until it says reset in progress then let go no you should get a reset successful message. If you've done all this try it again with the handbrake off, I know it sounds weird but it helps sometimes. Below the steps in an easy read format.

Ignition on
Press and hold trip button - first service due shows up
Release trip button

To reset the current item:
Press and hold - reset possible shows up
Release
press and hold - reset in progress shows up
Release - reset susccessful shows up after a few seconds

To move on to next item say you want to reset pads but brake fluid is before it:
Press and release until shows correct item

Hope that makes sense it does in my head, sorry if you've tried all this but maybe useful to someone

Now, that I think about about it, you could certainly have them ceramic coated. That way, anything that wants to stick to them can't. Or your can use carbon ceramic pads like I just had installed. That will take care of the brake dust problem, once and for all.

Yes, new sensors were installed with the new pads. Thank you for the instructions, my tech and I have already tried.
I sat in the car this morning, and tried it numerous times. It just says reset unsuccessful, for both the front and rear brake pads.
And my shops scan tool, couldn't reset it either. But this isn't a big deal, as I know when the new rotors and pads were installed, as I keep meticulous maintenance records.
But my OCD is kicking in, and I want it reset.

Maybe, if I disconnect the battery it would reset? But that brings its own little set of issues, reprogramming everything.

In all fairness, the front pads were thin, as the photo really doesn't reflect it, as I used the zoom function.
But trust me, they were down to about 40%, the rears were more pronounced in their wear.
My tech said the rears definitely were worn out, but the fronts still had life. I have a safety inspection due in August.
And it might take me that long to fully wear out those pads, then it wouldn't pass inspection.
So, I just bit the bullet and had everything done at one time. Plus, I don't have to deal with anymore brake dust.
The pads are still bedding in, so my stopping distance requires some adjusting with my right foot.

Did you try it with the handbrake released, the handbrake can cause the failure of pad reset. Unusual for the f15/85 to have reset problems. I know what you mean about ocd it's quite draining sometimes being so fanatical.

I see you went with OE rotors...but what brand pads and sensors did you go with? Part numbers?

No, I didn't try this with the E Brake released. But, I will when I leave work.

I went with Power Stop Z231738 Z23 Evolution Sport; Carbon Fiber-Ceramic for the front pads and Power Stop Z23919B Z23 Evolution Sport; Carbon Fiber-Ceramic; and it's included hardware for the rear pads.
I used Power Stop SW0462 for the front pad wear sensor, and Power Stop SW1698 for the rear. But honestly, it really doesn't make a difference what brand wear sensor you use.
But since, I was using Power Stop pads, it made sense just to buy everything from them. I have to admit, looking at those rotors thru the wheels, sure looks good.
I even bought some small M logos, that I placed on the rear calipers to match the fronts.

Granted my Pagid rear rotors were painted with a anti-corrosive paint from factory. And in my opinion, this would be the preferred method. As there is virtually little to no dust in these pads.
And, I'm also using a similar Power Stop carbon/ceramic pad on my X5M, so the rotors should look good for years to come. If not, they can always be cleaned and painted later.

What, I didn't know made all the difference. This morning, I started the X5M and put it into Neutral, disengaged the E-Brake. Then shut it off and press the ignition button.
Then pressed and hold the reset, that allowed me to scroll thru the functions, to reset the front and rear brake maintenance schedules to 60000 miles.
I also reset the brake fluid as well, as I had it flushed a few months ago. This was a great lesson for me to learn, as my OCD was kicking in hard, not being able to reset it earlier.

Has anyone given the EBC rotors a try or SHW?

Or should we only be using OEM?

I'm right about to order a set of SHW rotors for front and rear with power stop pads. I'll report back after.

Provided that you can find rotors for the F85, you can use whatever you like. I always stuck with OEM rotors, but use Power Stop Carbon Ceramic Pads.

I've been having a really difficult time sourcing the SHW front right rotor as it's out of stock everywhere. I have the rears and upon inspection seem to be of high quality. Car is at 101k right now, will install when I can source the fronts.
