X5M Squeaky Brakes

Hello. X5M developed squeaky brakes on day 2 of its life.

Plan was to wait it out as parts break in, but to no avail.

Now at 2 weeks / 850 km squeak level has increased to twice the volume and cringe level.

Please advise: Show to dealer or wait more.

Thank you for your kind advice.

Speaking from experience, it isn't going to get better. As far as I know, the dealer can chamfer your pads, but that's a temporary fix. Others have reported an SIB to replace pads, that was even worse I've heard.

Oh thats terrible news.

But would you say that this sound is just an audible annoyance and not harming / damaging any parts then?

Only an annoyance, no disfunction.

I noticed it Day 2, drove me NUTS! I kinda got used to it, you can manage the noise by downshifting to decelerate or putting more pressure on the brake. My squeak is high pitched, and happens on light pressure, so essentially at the beginning or end of a stop.

I tried bedding, power washing, even chamfered - none worked. Other guys dont have the squeak at all which I envy. Maybe someone here has a newer solution, but Ive found ways to live with it.

I do not think there is any harm done, its just one of the side effects of high performance brakes, although I disagree a car this pricey should sound like a city bus.

Ok thanks for that. Although one thing still stumps me, I can understand the sound not getting better despite hoping and wishing it would, but what must be going on in there making it get so much worse - especially on a dry day and on a full day of use...

1200 miles on my X6M now, and every now and then I get a little noise. I guess it just depends on your tolerance level.

Maybe it doesn't bother me because I have Pagid RS29's on my M4 for track work and they sound like a Mac truck.

for me it usually goes away after changing wheels from summer to winter, and after having it detailed. maybe the brakes get washed off enough that they don't squeak.

but eventually it will be squeaking quite loudly at every stop.

Same here - started on day 1, still happening at 750 miles...I think I'm used to it now. Although, a neighbor of ours has a Ferrari 458 and it also makes a squeal when it stops at the stop sign by our house, so I don't feel so bad about mine making noise

So for those who have learned to live with it have you taken it to the dealer though?

Just turn up the volume of the radio. I had mine replaced and they still squeaked. Weird thing is that on my M4, I don't hear any squeak at all. The other car I had that squeaked like crazy was one of my M6s.

It will only get worse. Mine started at several hundred miles and now at 7K it squeaks at every stop under very light pressure. Not a big deal for having near race car caliber brakes in this car. You can learn to modulate the brake pedal to minimize the duration of the squeaking. I just deal with it and have a loud exhaust to cover up the sound somewhat.

Have 26k miles and can tell you it doesn't get better no matter what you do. After a wash it goes away for a couple miles and gets progressively worse with more brake dust.

I also have a brand new m4 and the brakes don't make any noise. The x5m shares the same brakes as the m5/6 and notorious for the squeal. Nobody has been able to get rid of it without changing our pads to a aftermarket brand

I think I got used to it knowing we all suffer from this, misery loves company. So far its not worth the trip to the dealer b/c they can't remedy it. Aside from the brakes this thing is a beast.

I changed to aftermarket pads and they squeaked just as much, but didn't brake as well, so I am back to OEMs.

Can anyone confirm that there's is a BMW service bulletin for this? Even if it doesn't fix the squeak, I won't complain about a fresh set of pads! Can anyone confirm this?

I've had my X5M for 7 days now and same exact issue. I was planning on taking it in to service soon because of this issue but sounds like i'll have to start dealing with it. Very disappointing for a performance vehicle at this price.

There is another thread talking about it - the pads they used were worse though I believe.

http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...+squeak&page=3

Seems like every solution is temporary, in some cases they end up in worse results.

Exactly the same experience I've had a few post up from yours. X6M is squeaking all the time and my M4 is super quiet.

I noticed the same thing on my friend's X5M. I hope this isn't the issue with the X6M. It would be a disappointment and a nuisance..

my last X6M has no issue.
As every one mentioned my 2016 X6M brakes squeak like it had been on its last leg.
According to the dealership, BMW used stock brake pad that has no asbestos in them.
And when they are cold...that's when they squeak like a banshee.
If they are in a warm state then its no issue.
So in the morning...it will squeak.
Even after a highway run, with the wind cooling it...it will squeak to no end.
