No. Their tune for the 550i (stage 2 - which I think there is only one tune to buy now but you can add exhaust, etc in stages), advertised that the tune worked by including improved shift points in the low gears. It was explained to me by BMW of Gwinnett that Dinan engineered stage 1 to be for the motor and stage 2 to include integration with the transmission. I later spoke to Dinan tech support and they state they do not alter the tranny ECU, but they've learned how to work with the tranny ECU strategy to build a better tune. Therefore, from a dead stop, the tune launches the car - it wasn't acceleration, it was violence. Whatever you call it, they learned how to use the transmission strategy with their engine tune to scare the crap out of you.

You mentioned in one reply that you don't have an intake for the 50i because you don't have a car to test with. I am really interested in a Dinan tune for my x5 35d. It's a 2015 with 700 miles on it. You are welcome to borrow it for as long as you need if that gets diesel tune on the market (and on my car).

Thanks!

364 HP / 430 TRQ at the crank (roughly).

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you add the Dinan MPPK tune in regards to the digital gauge cluster that only goes to 400ft/lbs TQ? I was thinking about purchasing this.

Nothing. The digital display is unaltered. It will actually display numbers slightly less than what it was showing pre-tune with how the tune is interacting with the DME.

That display is just referencing a preset table in the ECU based on RPM and load and displays the theoretical HP and TRQ at those corresponding values. It is not a rolling dyno.

Makes sense. It would be nice to have a rolling dyno. Could you corroborate that the sDrive makes more WHP than the xDrive due to drivetrain loss against the AWD platform? I only ask here now since I have a specialist.

Short answer is yes. DT losses on a RWD typically are 12-13% whereas on a AWD range from ~20-30%. BMW's seem to be in the lower end of that range but we have seen in Audi world what appears to be some ridiculously crazy AWD DT losses.

I have noticed some turbo lag in the 50, as well as a slight delay in throttle response that seems more like a delay in the elctronics. Do you think the Dinan tune has made for less turbo lag, or have you noticed "sharper" response from the throttle as well? Sorry if that isnt a very clear question.

Please post more thoughts as you get more time with it. Congrats!

Aaron, when I first got the X5 at the beginning of January there was a funny hesitation and then almost a lunge when starting off from a stop. That's gone. Throttle response is so much smoother and it seems completely linear. Shifting is way better, and it wasn't bad before. The power is awesome. As I said earlier, you feel you and this two and a half ton truck are riding a gigantic wave of torque all the way to redline...and then again...and then again... ;-) I had an X5M and I like this truck better than that one. I highly recommend this modification.

God bless,
Tom

50i here as well with Dinan tune. Only been 2k miles since the tune but still feels really sluggish/laggy and takes about 50% throttle before it kicks in to a lower gear . And using the sport display the torque at 50% reaches high 300s but hp stays around 200. The only time I notice it go past 200 (more like 400) is at WOT. It's almost all or nothing. When using Sport mode it does respond a little better.

The great thing I've noticed though is mpg. Just took a round trip between Boston and NY and the avg mpg was about 21.2mpg (mostly highway) on the 50i. curious if the tune is more fuel efficient at Comfort mode but brings better fuel economy? Filling up the tank showed 485mi to empty and was pretty consistent through the drive.

Thoughts on the sluggishness? I also have a Hamann exhaust....
