Spotify & Android - Working

So got in the car today (2017 X5) and as I was driving I noticed music from my phone playing that I had on when in gym..

Looked down and cover art etc all on the screen - Spotify was playing through car over Bluetooth/App...I could browse playlists, search, home etc

On phone when I opened Spotify there was a warning about using Spotify when driving but not via iDrive...

So I thought - great - update or similar has made it work....

On my phone I got a pop up/alert saying "connected" had crashed and did I wish to close it - I hit yes - and music stopped

Then couldn't get it working again but on starting car again - Spotify icon appeared in Media menu and when selected music was playing again but this time no interface on idrive screen just the blank screen as seen below.

Has anyone had this before or is it something new?

Going to have another play tonight.

Android is an afterthought. Always has been on the idrive systems...it's a shame, b/c it's the most common mobile OS.

Ask me whether I'll pay up for apps...go ahead ask me.

It has worked for me in the past. I was going to turn on my Spotify to listen today (no not the paid app version). I will report back later on whether it was through BT or usb. I too have an Android OS.

It amazes me how well nearly every other car manufacturer has incorporated app control in their vehicle entertainment systems and BMW can't seem to get any of them to work right with Android.....REALLY!

My 2008 Acadia had full integration with Spotify & Pandora and BMW can't work it out?

I was almost excited by this thread.

btw, I just remembered, you can do basic Bluetooth software updates to the idrive yourself without dealer/coding. I suspect you probably upgraded Bluetooth software. This might solve the problem.

IIRC, that Bluetooth software is available for download on BMW website. Then you put it on a thumb drive into your car. Click a few menu options in idrive to update and you're good to go.

Everytime you update your phone's OS (new phone), you'll probably get an updated Bluetooth software. I do this everytime I get a new phone.

pffft, try any ford cars with the microsoft sync BS, it'll drive u nuts. 9/10 the system would not detect the phone, but the USB cable would charge the phone so for sure there is a connection... then when it does play music through itunes/spotify, it would either a) crash or b) disconnect the phone saying USB has been disconnected or c) if i go to skip a song it would say pause on the screen and then no buttons would work until i disconnect the phone or d) give me an error that the media track is bad... like wtf

My Samsung phone works great with the Ford system, Chrysler Hyundai, Kia and Toyota....pretty much every car I have rented in the last 5 years and everything but BMW. I can stream music and have basic Bluetooth functionality, but that's it. Truly the only disappointment I have with my M4 and X5.

I finally remembered to do it today and it was really easy. Once your phone is paired all you have to do is turn on Spotify and select your phone in in the media section of Idrive. Plays the song and shows the title. I didn't download any additional app.

Anyone having an issue with screen showing the album cover while using the pandora app on phone connected via bluetooth? Not sure if I need to update the software or what but when the 1st song plays the cover art is displayed on the screen but when the song finishes the screen is frozen on that artist cover. I can sometimes fix it by scrolling through the other inputs with the mode but annoying.
