I was dreaming of this quote for such a long time:
Development is also underway of a race-spec car ? the BMW M8 GTE ? to spearhead the return of BMW Motorsport to Le Mans: ?The BMW M8 GTE development programme for our Le Mans comeback is in full swing,? says BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. ?Developing a new racing car is always exciting, and in the case of the BMW M8 GTE the anticipation is that much greater still. We can?t reveal any pictures yet, but I can promise you that the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular. We are planning an initial roll-out for the first half of this year and are looking at giving the car its race debut in the Daytona 24 Hours in late January 2018.? Thank You BMW Time to KICK SOME ASS!!!!!! |

Looks good, albeit in camouflage and a little on the portly side. I wish they'd eliminate the B pillar though. The car just doesn't exude true GT Coupe proportions with that rear window being "fixed". Imagine what it'd look like with all windows down.

The M8 is the M model of the new 8 Series. Please look at the other threads in this forum - it is abundantly clear what is going on if you take a moment of time to look and read.

Synopsis/New Direction
Is it safe to surmise that the M8 and the other potential high level variants (M8x0i, M8 GXX...etc) are targeted against the Mercedes-AMG S6x coupes and exotic brand coupes (Rari, Lamb, Lotus, R8...etc)?
I am asking because it feels like BMW is really at work. Usually you have wait a while for the higher spec'd models. Now it's coming in at a timely fashion. It's like they want to catch up with MB or something. Lol But I'm no rookie to that game. We all know BMW don't roll like that. It's a "less is more" approach. I'd like a bit feedback on what I touched on. I feel I can learn more from your guys. Thanks. |

It is no more a competitor to the others you mention than an S63 is to its own AMG GT sibling. Which is to say, not really at all. |

The tent, the "excitement," the hype, the camouflage is all bollocks. We know what the 8 looks like, so hiding the M8 is plain silly. It's an M version of the 8 so there's no need to keep it from competitors. It's just the slow hustle. (Until, of course, BMW's bloviation department can churn out 6,000 words describing what 5 pictures could and will do.)

What's the point here? Why show a car in camouflage? Ridiculous and kind of stupid.

It definitely is quite a spectacular feature to behold, but it would compromise the overall rigidity of the car and require heavy reinforcements to compensate. Which as I understand is out of the question for the BMW brand philosophy today, aside from the convertibles where it is necessary. Especially with this particular model which does not at all want to compromise sportiness for luxury, unlike what a true spiritual successor to the pillar-less E31 might have allowed. Another reason, besides from the smaller size, why it should turn out significantly lighter than the S Coupé.
As a sidenote, likely only the 6 cylinder 8 Series (640i / 640d) will be available in RWD, since the V8 M850i and M8 should be exclusively xDrive, if the 5 Series range structure is transposed as expected. Not sure about any hybrid(s) yet. Last edited by advantage20; 05-28-2017 at 05:21 PM.. |

BMW already has a Coupe which surpasses most in exclusivity, luxury and performance. It's called the Rolls-Royce Wraith.
It is also one of the reasons why the 8er is definitely not a 2dr 7er. Sure it shares its genetics but it is designed to provide a more sporting concept but still play in the luxury segment. It's an advantage to BMW that the 8er can be radically different.

The i3 is already a pretty rapid EV. The S gives it more oomph in a package aimed at customers who certainly would like a more sporting BMW choice as an EV. The i3 S showcases possibilities that which of course will also be implemented in an i8S.

I'm sure the 8er is going to continue where the 6er left off but I, like many others, feel that this is a missed opportunity for BMW to really move away from sport/luxury for at least one car in the lineup and focus on luxury/sport and truly compete with Mercedes on this side of the spectrum. |

I thought the surprise was going to be that the 8 series was only going to be 1 model - the M8.
I really don't see how they can have a drastic enough difference in a 850 and a M8. |
