50i Muffler Delete

I finally got my delete doneZ. Installed a magnaflow x-pipe and quad tips.

Cold start sounds awesome and driving off is great too. Its definately not a setup for kids in the car though. Even cruising down the highway there definately is more noise inside, almost droning. When getting into the 4k rpm and above range, I feel like there is a wooshing sound coming from the tips. Maybe im just not used to straight piping a V8.

A video of cold start is below.

All in all i’ll say i’m happy I kept my original exhaust because if this doesnt grow on me in the next 3-4 months, i’m going back. However, im hesitant to remove the x-pipe and im wondering how that would sound with the stock muffler.

Sounds like a nice German V8

The beauty of it is that it doesn't cost $3-5k like some aftermarket exhausts that have almost identical sound. And you can always go back.

That been said - I gave my x5 to my wife to drive for a day and she is very sensitive to drone and often has headaches if drone is bad. Plus she is not into cars at all and would kill me if I told her how much I spent on a tune lol. For me that was a deciding test if I should go back or not. She basically didn't noticed it and said it was fine. I think when you drive it like she did - like a normal daily driver - without WOT and overtaking every car on the road - it's not loud really, just has that deep throaty sound.

That cold start can be coded out with tune or possibly alone via esys (not sure yet if it's possible to do via esys) for those who have to start it in the morning near sensitive neighbors.

It's also very easy to weld in couple small mufflers that will tame it down a bit. Lots of magna-flow hollow perforated small mufflers - they basically look like a slightly wider pipe. Cheap too. However, I never bothered with that as I like this sound. Just saying it's easy to tone it down for those who want it. Moreover - those expensive aftermarket exhausts for 50i that cost $5k - do exactly that - they delete muffler and straight pipe everything like in this mod, but they add 1 or 2 small mufflers just before tips to tone it down a bit. Then they slap their logo on it and sell it for $3-5k lol.

P.S. That wooshy sound on high rpms above 5k - is not really wooshy - it just sounds like that from our insulated cabin. I'll try to record that sound if I get a chance to show that sound. It's actually sounds very nice!

Quad tips

This SAV sounds the way it was supposed to sound. Changes the whole experience.
Hi. Could you please let me know where you got the double tips? I want to get some for my 50i MSport but not sure on inlet if its 2.5 , 2.75 or 3. Also wondering on the overall length. I am only changing the tips and not the muffler. I already have resonator delete and I am happy with that. Thanks

I'm doing the muffler delete this week or next. I passed on the magnaflow x pipe over the sketchy reviews left on Amazon over quality/pictures not matching and got a less known brand instead. If it is good, I'll share after the install. I am wondering about new tips myself... what's your guys thoughts on these?

I've got the alpine white (x-line) with matte black rims.

Just got them from my exhaust shop I think they are 2.75inlet and 3.5 dual exits. They had tons of options and backed them so I pulled the trigger when they did the delete.

Bump, looking for advice on quad tips. Also, do you suggest resonated tips or not on this setup? What about staggered?

3” ID to quad 3”OD is the easiest conversion.
2.75 ID slightly challenging
3.5 OD challenging or not is depends on space between two tips

Bumper is curved so staggered tips look much better and look as OEM as possible.

Ordered these...
Individual Tip OD: 3.5"
Total Width of both tips: 7 3/4"
Depth: 9"
Inlet: 2.5
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072K6W4V7..._bilEBbM4Y063C .

If they look bad, I'll see what the shop has or stay oem. I figure when they are welded and pipes placed they can be placed at an angle to be even with the curve. Thanks guys!

Naturally instead of muffler - you are going to weld in some L-shape pipes (mandrel bent) and attach tips to them. That's it.

P.S. Mandrel bent only means they use a machine that bends them smoothly and nicely without edges. Sorry for typos
Do you think it would be possible to add an electric bypass valve where you lined up for the Mandel pipe bend? I would still add the x-pipe as well for when the valve fails.

Im back and forth on whether I want it that loud all the time.

Don't see why not. I would say just add them where they are on the M. It's essentially the same exhaust layout with a different muffler.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

Now to find a decent bypass valve. Does anyone have any suggestions on the bypass? I've haven't heard of a reliable one yet. (But may be looking in the wrong places.)

Never heard of one at all. Bet you could get a hold of oem ones and then just wire a switch to them via one of the many rear bumper cut outs and up to the cockpit. And then to power and a ground.

I regret not putting in staggered tips. When I came across these tips I didnt think twice because I liked the look and ive seen M3's/M4's with them but their tips or towards the center and it works better.

Just finished the install this morning ($275, 2 hours labor 2 pipes, I supplied x pipe and tips), sounds absolutely beautiful! No noticeable drone 0 through 80. I'll also be going in for some service next week. Let's see how "friendly" the dealership is with this modification .
