It's louder than 10% for sure like Maverick said. Gas pedal is your volume knob basically: drive normally and neighbors won't hear a thing, push it hard and they will. As for drone - it's all subjective, ANY loud exhaust can be considered as having drone. Even $5k brand exhausts have some drone when driving on constant speed on highway. Even stock 50i exhaust has drone if you drive on certain slope on highway in certain gear. It's just on stock exhaust everything is very muffled and you don't hear drone as much. When exhaust gets louder - you start to hear more details that you haven't noticed before. It doesn't have drone like Honda coffee can exhausts have, but you can't make a V8 with what is essentially a straight pipe except cats/resonators to be 100% free of drone.
35i MPE has drone too. Amount of drone varies, but if you are sensitive to drone - stay with stock exhaust man. There is no free cheese. You can't open up V8 without some drone. The only solution is to muffle the crap out of everything and it's called stock exhaust.
Didn't you say you mostly eliminated your drone with an X pipe?

Yes. For me there is no drone in this mod that bothers me. And I'm a person who gets headaches if there is a real drone present. Even my wife who has constant migraines didn't notice anything wrong with exhaust when she drove the car lol - mainly because she drives it like a normal person and not like a imbecile I am doing WOT every chance I get.
But i get a feeling that when people ask about drone and ask if it's 10% louder than stock lol - they are not going to be happy. And hence I tried to explain to him that most probably he will hear drone and exhaust is definitely more louder than just 10% increase.

Yup, you're right, I retract my statement. I thought I read through this thread. I've been drinking through a fire hose reading through threads, getting to know this platform. This was a thread that I started, mean to come back to and didn't.

After reading through this, it'll probably be a little too loud for me. I do something to the exhaust on all of my rides so I'm familiar with what might happen. I just want a little more out of this thing. I might toy around with doing this mod and adding a couple Borla mufflers or something. It'll change the note some and hopefully tone it down just a bit.

No worries man, it is indeed overwhelming to tackle so much info at once. Yes, if you do this mod + add some aftermarket mufflers like Super 44 Flowmasters - you might get exactly what you want - more toned down version of this mod, but on the same time a lot more aggressive than just stock.
I'm very interested to hear how that will sound, so please update us if you'll ever go for it.

I've always wanted to add cutouts just before the muffler then pipe them back into the factory exhaust just before the tips. That way you can have stock or loud at the push of a button and the exhaust always comes out of the same tips.

Unfortunately, I've been too lazy to do it.

That's what I did on my F30. First I installed a Borla catback, had it on for a month or so and it was just a bit too loud for everyday driving if I needed to take clients around or something. Put the stock catback back on and added a cutout just before the muffler. Definitely the best of both worlds but the cutouts can have issues. I've had to rebuild mine a couple of times so its added maintenance and can be annoying.

Finally got this done. (Muffler delete not electric bypass. ) As soon as we started it up I had instant regrets.

I've been toying with this idea for a few months now and really regret not having this done sooner. Sound so much better in person than any of the sound clips and have not experienced any drone.

I got all the parts from my Muffler shop and with install it was $500. (X-Pipes and tips)

Yeah, the reason sound clips don't sound like in person is due to mics not able to pick up low bass frequencies. Add to that youtube compression and you'll get a pathetic end result that people try to listen to get an idea of how it sounds. Especially when listening on phone or laptop tiny speakers that can't even remotely reproduce anything close to that.

Here's a simple solution to all future readers.
1. Open your hood and check if you are lucky to have V8 in there.
2. If yes - then do a muffler delete mod.
3. Now you can relax and enjoy your 50i - you did good

Nice! What shop did you go to and what are the tip specs? Was there room to push those tips in a bit?

Also, curious to hear your thoughts on the first cold start this morning.

What size X-pipe is everyone using. Ive read both 3" down to 2.5"

Getting this done in the next few weeks and want to make sure I get the right one.

Thank you -

Because I was impatient, I was limited on the tips selection. These were slightly too wide but fit at an angle. (I wanted black tips, not glossy and without any logos. Also liked how they looked angled.) And besides, if I want to change them out again, it shouldn't be too bad for labor.

Cold Start was glorious. It was a bit loud, but that sequence last what 15 seconds? (You can also just put it in gear and back in park immediately to bypass the sequence)

Muffler Shop I used:
CN Muffler Shop
12121 Beechnut St
Houston, TX 77072
(281) 530-9997
Not the best place, but decent work at a cheap rate. (They were referred to me by someone on the e90 forums and my landscaper. When i was there he had multiple repeat customers come back in for more work. Pretty good sign for me)

Go with the 2.5". Guy at the muffler shop suggested the 3" but I went with the 2.5" since thats what most used. (There was also a post where someone bought the 3" and then bought the 2.5")

Most muffler shops will have the x-pipe, do yourself a favor and by the tips online.

Sounds good, thank you -

I'm actually going to cut the tips off the stock muffler to keep it sleeper lol

I contemplated that and may do that down the road. May be a good time to have them painted black.

That's exactly what I was going for !

I was also going to see if I could then attached the tips with some sort of clamp instead of welding since I want to make sure they are painted correctly - I was also thinking of having them powder coated instead

My wife has the car today because hers is in the shop.

She loves and basically said it really wasn't much louder than the v8 tundras stock. (Her evaluation)

3.25" I believe. When I had him start the job, I was going to go with a different tip set, when the oems were cut off, I just grabbed it off the wall and put it in to see how it was and I liked it.

Cool, I'll start shopping for some 3.5" then.

Just got my muffler delete done today too!

Went to the same shop as geedup35 , took about an hour and a half. Kept stock pipes, charged me 350.00.

So far I am loving it. Only drone I hear is driving in comfort at low speed when the transmission is in high gear, but that's about it. Put it into manual at open throttle and the shifts are glorious.

Haven't gotten to hear a cold start yet, but I am pumped.

Great mod!

Nope, sounds just right. Still getting use to it, it was silent in the cabin previously, but it really does sound great! Muffler is heavy as hell too haha
