Soft-Close Door Bulletin
All X5 option packages in Canada include soft close doors. Since I have small kids I find this option extremely useful - they can't always close the doors well.
I'v heard about doors popping open in the US bit Canada says they have never had a reported case (don't know how true this is). I am worried about the doors popping open and feel if I wait for it to happen knowing there was a bulletin it would be partially my fault. Does anyone know if this has been fixed for 2016 MY and if not should I just ask the dealer to apply the SIB? Thanks for your thoughts. |

I personally have never heard of the doors popping open, and I cant even understand how that would be related to the soft door close but who knows?!
The dealer can only apply the Service Bulletin if your VIN calls for it..they can't do it unless your VIN is one of those affected by the fault.

this never happened on my 2015 X5. Even on the cases where it did open for others it not to the point where the door actually swings open. It just open to the secondary latch (like if you didn't shut the door hard enough)

Many documented cases of this, including myself. I brought my car in for normal service along with reporting that the soft close actuator on the rear passenger door popped open ONCE. As Alan mentioned, the door will not fully unlatch/open at speed, but it's still a safety issue.
They not only replaced the failing part, but replaced all four with an updated part that always operates, regardless of whether the door is partially or fully shut. You can hear the motors operate even if you fully slam the doors shut. I posted about this in a thread a few months ago, but the search function on the app isn't really functional so will have to find it and edit this post with the link later.

SIB 511614 states there was an issue on some vehicles (IIRC) but i believe there wasn't a fix at that time... then there were updated actuators installed on vehicles that experienced an issue... so in theory the newest vehicles should have the updated actuators/motors but i am not certain.

EPC doesn't show when they changed the soft close door parts, but the early ones are NLA.

Thanks for all your comments.
From what I am being told the service bulletin was mainly for 2014 and early 2015 models. Apparently they changed the actuators. Not sure I should just take their word on it or just keep searching. |

Really, it's not something to obsess over. It's not like the doors would just go flying wide open. A very small percentage would become partially unlatched. They were still partially latched so they didn't fly open. This happened to a very small percentage of people and if it did happen, you would get a warning gong and a warning light on you dash so you could pull over and properly close it. And if that were the case, take it to the dealer and they will replace them. Nobody was ever hurt. And the problem seems to have been fixed. There are other, much more likely things in this world to worry about.
