Gasoline or Diesel? Why?
Hi All,
Wanted to have everyone's choice and comment on which would you go for on the new X5: Diesel or Gasoline + your reasoning as to why you would want to go for that option... We all know that in EU Diesel is more used and recognized...more interested to hear NorAm's point of view... |

Diesel isn't as widely used by normal drivers here in the States just yet. Here, it's still as/more expensive then Premium unleaded gas. In this case, looking at an SUV, personally I would lean towards diesel due to the torque and mpg. Especially with a tune.

There was a recent discussion about gas vs. diesel in this thread:
http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=906668 I drove the E70 X5 gas and diesel back-to-back and came away preferring the gas version. Ultimately, it's personal preference and you should test drive both if you can. |

Same reason as above, as with most items related to driving / vehicles we are behind the times in America. I just don't want to have to search and or pay more for diesel.

Torque, 500+ mile range, good match for a big vehicle, etc.
It really comes down to what you like and how you will be using the car. I've had my E70 diesel for 3 years now and love it, and would likely stick with diesel if I get the F15. |

Mine was an easier decision - the diesel is not available for some time. With all the issues with the 50i, I was not willing to wait for the diesel; but for the brutality of the torque; you CANNOT beat a diesel!!

I had the first edition of the E70 diesel; it was my company car and I would still be happily driving it today if I had not changed jobs and had to give it back (funny story: it took six months for my former employer to wake up to the fact that I still had their car
and finally ask me to return it). I got it initially in order to get better mpg and reduce my CO2 footprint, but once I drove it I got addicted to its incredible torque. Yes, it's slower off the line than the 6 cylinder gas version, but when you are trying to pass at highway speed or when you are going up a steep hill, it just accelerates much faster than the gas. |

50i would be the preffered choice if cost was no issue, but Im not sure Id take the 35i over the 35d. Most of the reviews so far have commented very positively on the 35d performance, but I don't recall seeing anything on the 35i.

While Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) is introducing its first plug-in electric in the U.S. for 2014, it’s also working to boost diesel sales and sees hydrogen as “one of the technologies for the future,” Manuel Sattig, project manager for BMWi, said in an interview. “We have every base covered,” said Jacob Harb, head of BMW of North America electric-vehicle operations and strategy. “There’s no silver bullet.” |

one thing is for sure...alternative technologies are emerging...Diesel will further expand in NorthAmerica for sure as it has for many years in Europe.

I would love to rather buy the gas version, but in Austria people are diesel crazy and its hard to sell a gas later.
