Hmm, in the 8mos that i've owned the beast and 6k miles that I've put on I've had to top it off (2 qts each time) twice!! I don't remember how many miles I've driven the first time I got the alert but noted it the second time. May take it in to have oil consumption test done.

I've found this oil consumption thing very interesting during my ownership. At first I was told it was normal and no problem we will top it off every time I needed oil. Last week I decided enough of me drinking the kool aid

I brought it in to the dealer last week and somehow ended up switching SA's during this process. The tech ended up finding a leak. Now I'm wondering if it's been leaking the whole time😡 I guess I'll know more details when I pick it up on Friday. I'll attach pictures of the leak.

I'm really starting to think these cars are just leaking oil, not burning it.

I looked over the paperwork, looks like they put in an oil dye, then drove to the car to see where it was leaking.

Found two places, oil pan gasket and crankshaft rear seal...

That's pretty standard out of big V8s. Exactly where my Mercedes 5.4L would leak when it got to that point. It's not like a common thing. Seals go bad over time. And BMW doesn't use the best products.

Going to the dealership today for a 2qt top-off. The last top-off was 10 months ago. I think I'm topping off about once a year. Is this normal?

Does this mean you're only doing 1 oil change a year? I hope you're doing them at least once every 6 months.

How many miles between top offs? I keep a eye on the oil level even since my wife drives the x5 everyday , but occasionally I drive it and beat the piss out of it so I like to keep it top off can’t imagine that it’s good to be beating on it 1-2 quarts low .

Does everything start leaking once you're above 36k miles. I just had my engine dropped less than a month ago for a lower timing case leak & now my level is here time to trade my 50i

If you guys are wondering my last oil change was at 35.5k miles and now I'm at 38k.

Doesn't mean you're leaning. This engine burns it as it gets older. That's probably 1/2 - 1 qt low which isn't crazy for 4K miles.

I was here two weeks ago is why I'm concerned.

I guess it's just consuming more as the engine is getting older. Maybe it's fine like you said.

I just dropped mine off to service, and while taking a hard right turn on my way to the dealership, the warning message about adding oil popped up.
I'm thinking it's a BMW thing, since my 330 also needed to be topped off every couple thousand miles..
I'm going to start keeping a closer eye on this, but not worried about it.

You had your oil changed 2 weeks ago and you checked it then and it was max level and you checked it now and it's half way down?

If not I would suspect the dealer didn't max you out. Simply filled to what was removed.

I found it interesting they drained and put the old oil back in. My repair the paperwork said guy put in new oil and filter even though it was just in for oil and filter service 1000 miles before.

That's exactly what I've been saying. Only 1 page out of 5 of the paperwork lol:
Extended warranty for this car is a no brainer

Yeah pretty pathetic, you would think after all the trouble of fixing the leak they would throw in some fresh oil, what a joke!!

I couldn't have said it better. I was shocked that they didn't leave me at the max. After the dealer had my car for a week

I don't see really anything a warranty would cover. Leaning gaskets sounds like maintenance

My 15 X5 50i was experiencing the 2-quart low oil warning between oil changes and I took it in and asked for a full vehicle check.

They found the upper oil pan was leaking. They did the service work to it under warranty.

The work looked extensive and my advisor said it would have been a costly bill had it not been under warranty.

I would ask any 50i owner to have this checked if you are getting the 2-quart low warning between oil changes!
