You know what? Running an engine is bad for the engine. Is idling an engine bad for it? Compared to what? Running an engine serves a purpose. The vast majority of that purpose is to move the car. But there are other purposes. When it's cold, it warms the interior. When hot, it cools the interior. If you are talking about warming up the engine because you think it is better for it to be used only when warmed up, then yes, that is no longer the best strategy. There will be less wear and tear on the engine if you just start it and go. So, for that purpose, there is nothing to be gained by idling for any length of time. But if you want to warm or cool the interior prior to driving, idling is fine. Modern engines are just fine with it. Yes, they are getting wear and tear, because they are running, but they are serving a purpose, and that is what they are for... to serve a purpose. That wear and tear is no greater than if you were actually driving. Is idling an engine for a few minutes to heat or cool the interior going to cause me to have to replace the engine before I trade it in 4 years? No. If I plan on keeping it for 10 years? Still, not likely. If I still have a vehicle after 10 years, I'm quite sure that any repairs that would have to be done over that time would have nothing to do with idling for a few minutes before driving.

I thought oil is viscous enough for cold temperature and you suppose to heat up your engine before start revving. Or at least let the idle revs drop done, usually it happens within 30 seconds after engine is started. |

I called Endras BMW in Durham yesterday, they said they haven't heard anything officially released and until they do they can't quote on it.
You'd think Canada = cold winters, maybe they would have started rolling it out here first but that doesn't seem to be the case. |

this has been added to the manuals after epa mandates on engine idling... i do not know how much of this is engineering based or legislation based. long ago in a land far away we were taught to idle until engine was warm then drive conservatively until all the other fluids reached operating temps. also we were told that starting and stopping an engine wasted more fuel than idling... now we have vehicles that shut-off every time you step on the brake longer than 3 seconds. so who really knows what is best and what is just legal bs?

From NY,
Cold climate but not as bad as our counterparts in the North, and even with a couple BMW's I've had i personally don't have a need for the remote start. These things warm up so quickly in the winter once you get it moving after 30 seconds or so... I now have a 40e, and preconditioning with the connected app the past few days have been amazing. Not a drop of gas used, uses w/e source of electricity to run the heat.. so perfect. So i get it. Im a CA at one of the dealerships here, Im waiting for service to install the remote start for one of my clients F15's though. Hoping it doesnt disappoint.

^true however the cheaper alternative is giving up one of your keys... then you're at around $800... either way, after speaking with dealer and people in the know i have decided this is not something for me and an aftermarket solution would be more practical and cost-effective.

I also got the same price 893 + 400 for parts and installation... why would they charge400 for 1.5 hrs of work?

I was quoted 5 hours of labor by one dealer. Another dealer quoted me 2 - 3 hours of labor.
