HK Sound System Question

Today I was cranking AC/DC's Thunderstruck and I may have turned it a bit too loud because my sound system was "thunderstruck" and it cut-off completely. It was at approximately 75%.

I turned off the sound system and turned it back on and nothing seemed to be wrong. Is there an automatic overload (or whatever it may be called) that prevents damage to the speakers.

I looked at a few random sites, and this seems to be a decent answer regarding this: "If your speakers are the original speakers the amp is giving them too much power you need some better interior speakers. the speakers in your car have an overload switch as you turn your volume up its sending more power to the speakers which overloads them, so they shut themselves off to prevent them burning out"

You should crank up tribute band Hayseed Dixie, especially their version of Dirty Deeds. HK much prefers Hayseed Dixie to the original.

HK might prefer Hayseed Dixie but I'm not sure I do!

Maybe I am getting old but I've never gone past 40% on my HK and I'd had the vehicle for 10 months!

How do you know what percent? There were no percentage/numbers on the dial or on screen in E70. Is that upgraded to show volume indicator on F15?

Agreed. 50% is as loud as I've been able to stand it. The system lacks bass, but it is loud as hell.

Think it was Ted Nugent that said 'it isn't loud until your ears bleed'

The percentage is only a guess using the visual bar graph. And maybe the 75% was a bit high after looking at it again. But I can definitely handle 50% or above. And I agree with the bass being a bit lacking but the sound is clean and clear. I'm still trying to get the equalizer set the way I like it.

Yes, I just guess-timate using the bar on the screen. Most of the time I am at about 25% with windows closed

Thanks, yeah sounds like an update on F15, I have no bar in E70 with Premium Sound.

Good choice , I do like to sometimes crank up the volume in mine and I have the HK sound system. I'm pretty sure I've almost taken it to the max without any issue but I'll have to make a point now of cranking up Thunderstruck to see what happens.

When I have cranked it up I get no distortion at all.

I had the 600 watt HK system in my X3 and I was able to crank it to the absolute max with no issue. This system is really strong and durable. Don't be afraid to listen too loud.

Which brings a question to mind. What is the wattage of the HK system in the F15?

I believe it's 600, per the configurator.

I listen at ridiculous volumes quite often with no problem... Maybe the source/music itself has some distortion the system doesn't like. Does it happen with something else?

People thinking the base lacks: sure it doesn't rumble like my SVS home theater sub but it's pretty good for music. Do you have your equalizer right and not just the base/treble up? Don't forget there is an equalizer in your iPhone too that is off by default.

I agree, the only thing missing from the HK system is better bass. Not that the bass is bad, there's just not enough of it. Need a 8-12" subwoofer (or a better one) somewhere in the car to kick it up from "really good factory" to "WOW".

Another home theater/audio buff I see (by the selection of SVS). I have a theater in my house with a (now defunct company) Epik Conquest in the corner. Let's just say, not much in the way of stock audio in a car is going to impress me very much on the bass side of things.

Tried Thunderstruck from an iPod and USB cable using normal Apple encoding at full volume in my F15 with HK sound and no distortion and certainly no shut down, even ramped up the bass. Ran for the whole track so amp had plenty of time to get warmed up and no issues.
