51k miles on my 2015 without any issues. It's been flawless. Only normal maintenance.
Another poster is right, executive package has the Harmon kardon system bundled in. I had HK on my 35i, which I ordered, but my 50i doesn't have it. I will say the HK does sound better, but the base stereo with the right sound source doesn't sound bad. Still has lots of bass, etc. What's missing, imho, are more detailed highs, overall spaciousness and ambiance. I thought about upgrading the speakers and amp, but I'm not sure how much longer I will have the car. |

I helped a buddy buy an out-of-state vehicle from carmax. We transferred it and as part of the transfer we could ask 5 “walk around” questions and the responses were recorded as part of the transfer paperwork. If the vehicle condition differed from what was communicated during the “walk around”, you can walk away from the car & have the shipping costs refunded. Fortunately, the X5 we transferred was in stellar condition & matched the walk around responses. We bought the car, no haggling, no nonsense and a very smooth experience.
Their extended warranties are probably the best in the business, and that’s a primary reason I’d consider buying luxury cars from them. Their 30-day warranty that comes with all cars paid about $2k to the bmw dealer to fix the passenger side mirror because the curb view wasn’t working. No questions asked. I was pretty impressed. |

My 2014 50i just passed 88k miles. I've had to replace the spark plugs once at somewhere around 65k or 70k miles. I've also had to add the odd quart or two of oil between changes. Averaging 17.9 mpg, which I think is acceptable given the performance and size of this vehicle.
Overall, I really like the X5, but I LOVE the N63tu. Last edited by dudeman44; 02-14-2019 at 02:03 AM.. Reason: Removed off-topic content |

Did they quote you a price or do you still have some sort of warranty?

TC in x5 is not 50i specific AFAIK (could be wrong). It's a ATC45L unit (with minimal changes) that was used on previous generation of x5 too on both 35i and 50i. AFAIK BMW puts it in other models too, not only x5. It needs timely oil changes, probably every 50k miles or even earlier if you drive hard. Clutch in it can overheat due to lack of oil - basically if you neglect it and abuse the car (which who knows what previous owner did, I can bet TC oil was never changed due to low mileage) and often drive in stop and go traffic - it will heat up and eventually might fail. This was known since E70 x5 if you read E70 forum. However, this is NOT a common issue. Just realize that it's not hard to kill TC in x5 if you drive like you stole it - you can imagine what stress TC experiences. We don't know what previous owner did: burnouts in 50i, numerous 0-60 drag starts - and then he returned it to a dealer (or sold it to you if it was private sale) and the car was sold CPO as in "pristine condition, cared and washed everyday lol" This is why I hate buying second hand. Also, keep in mind that "serviced in dealership" means bad news when it comes to buying 3-4 years CPO cars, lease return etc - as BMW (dealers) have abysmal/long oil change intervals. Their "lifetime" fluids are also infamous. So IMHO after you get it fixed - just change fluids in your x5 in timely manner and NOT as per BMW lol. Last edited by DuSh; 02-11-2019 at 10:02 PM.. |

Owned a 48i, 50i E70 X5 M-Sport then a F15 50i M-Sport and F85 X5M. I never had any issues or complaints. The only repair needed was a fault for gas cap along with a EVAP canister. Other than that it has been routine maintenance and services.

+1000 BTW, if I was to buy an f15 all over again, the only option that I would actually want is DHP. Its such a night and day difference. I have a G05 xdrive40i now as a loaner and it feels like a boat. I've had this loaner since 1/31 and put about 500 miles in driving situations and cant wait until I get mine back. (I've had this loaner so long that me and my daughter have named her. I wanted name it Peppy but my daughter wasn't a fan of the name. We've compromised to "Peppy Pig" after her favorite cartoon and how it handles.) |

First one was an N63 unit in my F10 550i. It got replaced by an N63TU unit. It's still working tbh. I've had a good friend of mine who had the same happen to his F10 M5. Then I got myself an F15 50i (which had the supposedly fixed N63TU). 19k km on the odo, and I lost a cylinder while on a family trip in another country. And when I went to BMW (yes, I went to BMW directly, not to my local dealer!) and asked I want my car changed, I got an "unofficial recommendation" I should not get it replaced with a V8 car, if I wanted to avoid the same problem in the future. They practically told me "stay away from the V8". And from the 50d, for that matter. Imagine that? So for me, the N63* is while probably the best one in terms of joy, is the worst engine BMW has ever made. And this is coming from a guy that has owned a dozen of BMWs with all sorts of engines.

High power and poor maintenance will lead to supposedly poor quality motors.
I feel members here will take care of their cars which results in good reliability. I mean there are outliers which is always unfortunate.

I mean this is why I am trying to raise public awareness, because otherwise people and even dealers in your case (not you personally of course) have no clue I’m on the verge of giving up. I’m on Facebook group too and people will say so much lies about n63tu without even knowing what it is. I can bet in 5 years we’ll have n63tu8 and people will still repeat old mantra about n63. |

It’s ridiculous how some folks are online. They’re what are called armchair experts. They only know based on what they read online and spec sheets. Many will never see the engine or drive a car with one in real life.

The same occurs with folks who never owned, leased or financed a Land Rover or Range Rover but bash it to death. It appears that bad news travels louder and further than good news or non-events and every one is an expert online or "knows someone" who owned a <insert horrific story>.

So I run a little dealership here in Utah and I only sell bimmers. I am coming back years later to edit this post now that these cars are getting a little older:
Over time, you may have issues with CCV, turbo inlet hoses, turbo cooling lines, fuel pumps, and a few other odds and ends. Valve stem seals are a real possibility at higher mileage. Make sure you have consistent oil change history on a used car to reduce the risk of stem seal failure, and bearing failure. The part number for valve stems seems to be unchanged vs the previous gen N63s. Overall, we still love the engines. Last edited by ProjektAutoScott; 11-20-2023 at 03:09 PM.. |
