Florida here as well. I went sDrive without regrets. Save the money up front, get better MPG. Don't worry about resale - if you plan to stay in FL like I do, you will have no trouble selling at a fair price.
Other areas of the country with winter weather, yes... FL, no! |

I agree, I have the E70 X5 X-drive now, but thinking about just getting the S-drive this time around, since Im in FL. as well and don't need it. I lease as well, so I don't care about resale value.

Yeah, I could get a gt, except I couldn't park it in my driveway. Because it's hideous. Also, I would never drive it. Because it's hideous.

Absolutely not the case. Terrible comparison. Since you seem to like Apple, it would be more like: Buying an iPad Wifi or a 4G LTE iPad.... But whats the point of a 4G LTE iPad if you are always 100% of the time in your Wifi area? Case in point, whats the point of getting a xDrive in Florida where we dont see snow, dont have hills, etc... |

I live in So cal. Pretty similar to Florida in regards to weather. I went with xDrive. As matter of fact, if I can avoid getting a two wheel drive ever again, I would - in any vehicle.
I use to drive an Audi S5. It Quattro technology saved my butt many time while it was raining (I believe Florida gets hurricanes?). I wasn't racing or going excessively fast. The car just felt more stable and planted. Handling was better and predictable, and no wheel slip, even at severe wetness. When I drove my friends 2 wheel drive Highlander, this was not the case. Also, X5 xDrive is not a 4x4. It's AWD. There is a difference. In a nutshell, 4x4 is for off-roading. AWD is for increased stability control. This is why you don't ever see X5 going head to head against Range Rovers. As matter of fact, BMW knows this and calls their X cars SAVs, and not SUVs. You can't group AWD and 4x4 together. I would certainly never go off-roading with my S5. My wife and kid will be in my X5, whereas S5 was primarily for me. With that in mind, I chose AWD vehicle again. Z. |

I've driven the FWD Highlander and its stability does not at all compare to driving the X5 sDrive. During hurricanes most people in South Florida aren't out driving as they have sought out shelter for safety. I have been driving RWD BMW coupes for at least 12 years in South Florida and did not once ever think to myself, "wow, I really wish I had an AWD". There is no need for me here unless I am moving to another state.

A hurricane might have been a bit "extreme" of an example. How about we make that into "rain." Actually, light rain is the worse time (in the matter of beginning, middle, or end of a rain) to drive because it lifts the oil in the road upwards instead of washing it away. Like you, prior to driving an AWD, I felt the same way. As matter of fact, I even enjoyed the occasional rear wheel spinouts. But my point is, although you may not need AWD everyday, when you do need it, it's great to have. Oh...and yes, is 2k justifiable for that occasional use? Well, I guess that depends on whether you get into an accident and just how bad that accident might be because your rear wheels slipped out in that *one rare occasion*. If the accident I might have gotten into could've cost me more than 2k, it just paid for itself. My 2 cent is, 2k difference is chump change when it comes to my family's safety. Also, I guess I see AWD like horsepower. May never use it, but great to know I have it when I need it. I'm not here to convince anyone. I'm here to just say why I got it. Everyone has their reasons for getting an option or not. I have B&O speakers and think it's well worth it. I know a lot may disagree. But in the end, it's my money and I spend it they way I see fit....just like everyone else. In the end, as long as you enjoy the ride, that's all that matters. Z. There are many reasons to go with RWD SUV over RWD wagon: SUV will be safer in a crash, safer out on road because better visibility over other cars, easier to ingress/egress, easier to load, etc etc. There are cons as well but to tell someone to buy a wagon because they want a rwd is silly.
As for resale, the original $2K difference will be much less in southern states. Lucky if you get $500-$1000 more than rwd after 3 years. Almost no difference after 7 years. This will be less severe in more inclement weather states. |

In South FL, I have never had anyone question why I would have a RWD F10 535i instead of AWD. With the F10 and the F15, there are a number of similarities in their construction (albeit the F15 is taller and heavier). Also, look at all the SUVs outside the snow belt that are not 4WD/AWD as well as all of the pickups that are sold in 2WD. The one thing I have never really cared for is FWD with a heavier vehicle (ie our 2001 Highlander or our 2004 XC90). In terms of RWD with the sdrive X5, the traction is on par with the 535i and it drives great. Funny, it drives a lot like a RWD BMW... Some of the reasons we have a SUV are for the interior space, the versatility for hauling, and the ride height. |

Absolutely love that BMW made a rear wheel drive version of the X5 available. We have no need for all wheel drive and we hated having to pay for all that technology and hardware for nothing. It's priced beautifully as an sDrive base vehicle which allowed us to add all kinds of features we really wanted. The thing will still have traction control for limited slip like rear drive, so it will be perfectly fine and perfectly "stable" in 99% of situations on U.S. roads. I grew up in PA and drove a rear wheel drive all through high school and college. You don't need to be from the SoCal or FLA to get by with 2wd. You need to know how to drive.
