F15 X5 to F85 X5M

With the reveal and production start of January 2015, I am seriously considering on trading my '14 F15 X5 to the '15 F85 X5M.

My original plan was to keep the X5 and get a second M sedan (E90) in a couple of years, but I was thinking "what the hey" to kill two birds and have 1 single ///M family hauler that I can enjoy in the next 5 or more years (less insurance, gas, expense on tires and brakes).

I guess my fear is if I do not get one now, the next chance will be in 18 or so years when the kids are out of the house!

Your thoughts...?

2014 3.5i to 2014 X5 M = YES. I say do it. If you have the means, it's a great idea to kill 2 birds with one stone. It's practical in the sense like you said for family and helps with taxes too! My next car for sure maybe 10 years down the road will be a custom-ordered X5 M. For now, I'm very happy/content with my 5.0i esp with my RaceChip tune and custom mods I will be doing. Give me a pros and cons list that you have devised for yourself so I can help research and narrow things down for you .

Agreed. Especially that the new F85 is expected to be a monster in every aspect possible. Plus, the extra advantage of it being a family car really makes it an all-rounder. I'd definitely advice you to do so if it is possible.
I contacted the sales person I usually deal with and he told me the X5M would be available in our local showroom around mid-december, which is very exciting.

I'll be on the rational side and say - wait for it, at least need to see what exactly they'll announce. The E70 X5M is the bloody cask of Danaides - no matter how much $ you poor into it, it still screws you over (specifically the engine... it's probably the worst/least reliable BMW engine there is right now) and then some. Only GT-R comes close to how much money you need to pour into this beast to get it going... until something breaks again and you pour some more... and more... and more.

P.S. The above is written with a "drive hard" or "drive the way you're meant to drive ///M cars" in mind. Not with "my all-season tyres run for a good 30k and so do my brake pads". No, with ///M you're on the "threw the pads after 7k, tires after 10k" territory.

P.P.S. If I had the $ right here right now - I'd be in the same boat as well, changing from my AC Schnitzer tuned M50d to the ///M. But in here, anything with a proper gas engine comes with a TAX. A good example would be smth like a new RRS 5.0 which would set you off about 100k grand EUR pre-tax and 200k after tax Granted I expect the BMW engine to be way more nature friendly (i.e. definitely below RRS 299 CO2), but still - goddam fortune. Did a calculation on a fully loaded M4 recently... 122K EUR after tax and that is more than my loaded M50d

I suggest getting a M3/4 or a sport car as a second vehicle is better. X5/X6 are still full size and heavier vehicles also the handling feel is so different between those. Getting the most expensive X5 is one thing and driving a sport car is another. I had months in the last the X5 M and a M5 this year. I feel both are too heavy and big. Often asked myself why I need to drive so fast with my family in the car??
IMO test drive a F80 M3 or so after your snow clears away first. See if you prefer a second sport car and what you really want. If you just want more 3.5 power then there is Dinan, BMS and Racechip options, those are cost lower than your deprecation.

I'd say the X5M is still a SUV, albeit a fast one. If you are looking for 1 car, I'd say an estate like Audi Rs6 or Mercedes e63 amg s would be better. If you need off roading and one car, the X5M is your choice, myself I'd buy a second fun car and carry the family in the X5. Parking spaces etc change what is possible so it is hard to suggest options without knowing how many kids, your budget, do you drive in the snow, do you need 2 cars, can you have 2 cars...

If $ is not a real issue, then IMO you'd better off keeping X5 and getting something for fun unless you really, really want to compromise and then do go for X5M or something with 0 resale value and insane straight-line performance as an RS6.

If it's really fun you're after (because us petrol heads and our family members usually have different definitions of fun: what I call fun, my wife calls insane), then it gets really complicated... I.e. with my M50d, which is a great car, I feel I still miss my E64 in so many ways. And that leads you to options and decisions... Porsche Boxter/Cayman GTS, Jaguar F-Type V6S, BMW M3/M4, etc. All cars have their + and - and it's a pain in the ass to choose even if you have the money to afford them.

Counting in depreciation, I would get the used M3 or Cayman and chip the 35i for no matter how good the x5m is its still a suv with all that mass.

Honestly- I'd pick up an E9X M3 and keep the X5 (it'll cost you about the same vs. the bath you're going to take on the trade).

It's a totally different, more visceral experience than anything you'll get in an SUV.

Do yourself a favor and at least test drive a proper M car before you make any decisions.

I too will be making the same jump, issue is my dealer is not allocated one so I'm being told to hold on. According to them, im the first to ask and they need to get more info before going forward. Dealer states they will discount accordingly and I will be happy when it's all over. Donington Grey/Red here I come!

X5/X6M will murder any SUV on a track or straight line and eat some sport cars for breakfast
How is it not proper M?
Also, it's one car vs two to keep/maintain
Another thing, which i might have interpreted incorrectly, is new X6M quicker/or as quick on The Ring than E9x M?

P.S. I'm not saying X will give you the same experience as E9x M, but you need to spend some time behind X5/6M to appreciate this monster

No doubt it's a monster- but so is a GTR (but, IMHO, a proper M car the GTR is not). The approach these vehicles take to put up those times relies on a combination of brute force and driver intermediating technologies that just don't do it for me.

Again- these are impressive vehicles, but not for reasons that I would typically characterize as qualities of a GT or sports car made by M.

If the OP could swing both, I'd suggest he go for it (there's nothing like having enough HP that your palms sweat to and from yoga, am I right?).

But if he has to choose, the X5M (IMHO) won't be nearly as satisfying as a proper GT or sports car.

As for the E9X, its non-EPS steering and telepathically responsive throttle (re: S65) offer a more rewarding experience that you really can't find (in the existing BMW stable) anymore...and at approximately the difference in price.

Anyway- just my opinion. I recommend at least test driving the E9X (and following up).

Officially made the allocation "mine" today at my dealer. Programs/rates aren't published yet but it is now in the system for whenever that does happen. Should have an actual production number in mid-January I've been told, though rumors have SOP pushed back to 2/15 for both US/Canada.

Currently Long Beach Blue/Mugello Red, but leaning towards Donington/Red or Melbourne Red/Silverstone. Options are Driver Assist, Executive Package, 21" Wheels, Park Assist, Enhanced Bluetooth, Rear Entertainment, B&O, and Night Vision.

This is one of the first allocations. I want a unique color combination to show off the car for the first few months while it is still new/rare. Not sure what mods I might do, if any. Loved how unique my X5 was in the beginning - now everybody has the same mods. Might just keep this thing stock or wait to see what BMW comes up with.

I do hope Akrapovic or another reputable aftermarket source make an exhaust, though.

I think that coughing up $60-70K is ludicrous on top of a trade on my x5

The E90 route looks promising + a tune for the x5

With the F85 starting at $106K, all-in could shoot up to $130K which you can almost buy 2 X5's lol

I was sitting between getting the X5M or the 50i. I have the means for it, but don't know if it's worth it.

With regards to the GT-R - when i had it, the upkeep was not really that bad. You pay to play, and i kept it strictly for the streets, I never tracked it.

What are the real world figures people are getting 0-60 for their 50i?
