Too bad we only get the 3 liter diesel in the US - which I find really annoying.

The 5 liter diesel has got to be an absolute blast to drive - probably exceeds the 50i:
The 30d, 40d and 50d are all the same 2993cc 6 cyl engine in different states of tune. Long gone are the days when you could tell the engine size on a BMW by the number on the back

Having said that, a 5 liter oil burner would be bat-shit fast.

Yeah that is true - I think the largest output diesel gets a 3 turbo treatment ... Even more annoying that BMW doesn't offer anything but one option here ...

381 HP / 546 torque and 42 MPG (?)... nuts ...

I would opt for this engine without ever even driving it.

Thumbs up mpg

just want to report to you....

I just made 275 miles in my loaner car with 3700miles on it - x1 x2.8, with aver. speed of 60-75 mph with AC on and outside temp 32-35F using EcoPro mode + using CControl for about 90% of a time - my average speed were 63.5mph and I got !! 26.1mpg - totally not impressed (GAS 93' 10% ethanol)

I thought I would get at min 30+mpg

my new 2014 X5 50i in service - long story... valet person crashed my new car in-front of me during final 2 minutes of delivery, nothing serious but needs to be fixed
... last weekend I was able to pull on my new x5 with 750miles V8 445HP engine traveling 50-60mph (black ice all the way until home), again 275 miles temp 28-35F , aver speed 53mph EcoPro mode with CC 90% .... my MPG=25.4 door to door (including multiple traffic stops due to accidents) - that I think really impressive on a car that has double the cylinders and almost double the weight

You my friend are a much kinder man than I ... I would have refused delivery of that vehicle, and a new vehicle built to my specs. For $83k, I refuse to take a new car that some clown already damaged ... if any damage is to occur, it will most definitely be of my fault.

the N63Tu is a great motor ... I love my '14 550xi ... but I'm getting about 11mpg in the 550xi (with VERY spirited driving) .... I knew better when ordering the X5, and went for the 35i, as it will be the wife's daily driver, and she travels 30 miles each way to/from work ... we'd be filling up 2x/week on 93 octane if we went for the 50i!

I bet you can get 28+ hwy mpg under the same condition as mine with 550xi -cd0.29? vs 0.31

I remember my 530i from 2006-7 same trips with 37mpg
at the same time remember 7.9-8.5mpg on V10 M6 NYC driving

After 1200 miles in Queens, NY, average 11.3 MPG. Don't think it would get any better but I've learned to accept it and enjoy the power.

I have started seeing a little more ... 17+ mpg city. Don't do much highway driving, so I cannot effectively comment on that.

But the one time I did take the car on the highway; at 75mph; I did see over 30mpg

EmPower thanks but i was guesing on what others said in this topic because there is so many things that effect mpg-s things like how you drive, your tires and so on.

Like already stated, if you are worried about MPG, forget the 50i. As for the actual MPG it completely depends on how you drive and the type of driving you do. I get 1 mpg better than the wife but on average we are 12.5 in city(Chicago style) and Highway at 18-19 but that would be 75-80mph average. I have had E53 4.4, E70 4.8 and E70 50i and have not achieved the stated MPG.

EPA fueleconomy.gov site

Wonder why it is taking so long to get the official numbers for the 35d up on the government's website. Also curious whether actual mileage comes closest to which of the three numbers (city, highway or average). The obvious answer is that it would depend on your style and location of driving, but I know the negotiations with industry make the test procedures inherently artificial and manufacturers don't get official results for their various driving modes like "Eco", so would be interesting to here some anecdotal comparisons.

"BMW USA lists the epa mpg of the 35d at 23/31"

So my assumption from what is on the BMW website is that the EPA has shared some data on the 35d with BMW that they haven't been willing to add yet to the .gov website, which has three entries for each vehicle

2014 F15 xDrive 35i

Just picked up the car yesterday and drive from NY to PA (~260 miles) and got around 23 mpg. This was mostly highway driving but with the snow falling I was driving at different speeds throughout the drive.
