Really, I was actually going to drop by later to take a look. I'll probably see your car there, lol. I'll take some pictures.

I'm starting really simple and just replacing the front components and dynamat. In the spring I'm going to move those to the rear doors and have them fab a new door panel to fit the KRX2s. Right now no amp... No sub. Just components and dynamat. The audio budget got slashed when I decided on the Modesta.

Mine isn't going to be elaborate (yet). Only replacing the front components today. I'll move them to the rear doors in the future and have door panels fabricated to house the 6.5" KRX2 driver. I don't have the budget for my plan at the moment, but I needed a better front sound stage than the HK offers.

Hopefully the Dynamat will help with the highway road noise a bit, too.

Hey I just missed you today. When I got there Jerry said you left just 5 minutes ago. They're still working on my car but it's going to be done by next week. Here are some pictures I took.

The first picture you can see the Focal KRX3s on the door panels. I also added some additional LED lighting in the interior, or "ambient lighting" as BMW likes to call it. Here it is set to blue.

In this picture you see the trunk with LED lighting set to red.

Underneath the trunk there's an extra battery, an Audison Bit One processor (it's blocked by the battery in this picture), and 3 amplifiers.

After the car's done I'll take some nicer pictures of everything.

Looks good. The KRX3s weren't in yet when I saw it... I only saw the door fabrication as I was thinking the same for KRX2s. Trunk looks good... I've got a third row, so I'll need to get a little creative when the time comes. But I'm glad you're happy... jerry has done 3 cars of mine and they've all been A+.

Hmm, with the 3rd row it is difficult. You'll have to go with a simpler setup. Maybe use a passive crossover setup rather than an active like mine (so you wouldn't need the Audison Bit One and you don't need multiple amps.)

Here is something you can do. Use a multi-channel amp to power the components that you put in today as well as a subwoofer. Here's a JL 5 channel amp.
http://www.jlaudio.com/hd900-5-car-a...plifiers-98223

This is the sub I have, but you can choose a smaller one if space is an issue. You really just need 1 sub. I recommend JL's sealed pre-made boxes. I've tried many subs and these are the best:
http://www.jlaudio.com/cls110rg-w7ae...-systems-93270
http://www.jlaudio.com/car-audio-sub...stems-prowedge

So get an amp and a sub and that's pretty much all you need. If you still want the KRX2 later you can add it, but that's an expensive upgrade and the $ vs utility is going to be less than the initial amp/sub upgrade. Most people are happy after an amp/sub upgrade.

As far as mounting the amps, it'll most likely be behind your 2nd or 3rd row. Something like this:

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look when I'm at my computer. I'm definitely not going active as it complicates the process for the BMW. I'd eliminate the rear (3rd row) speakers but Jerry mentioned that they support the parking sensors.

I've always used an Alpine PDX v9 and loved them. They've got a great sound and don't kill the budget. My dilemma will be processing and not eliminating any features, while amplifying the two pairs of components and a sub(s).

I had a single JL 10W6 in my TL and it was more than adequate for my taste in music. Since space is at a premium and I'm constantly transporting sports gear, I may be subjected to doing some homework on an underseat pancake sub and use the factory location. I'm not trying to shake the hood with Ice Cube... Just wanting Art Blakey and Miles Davis to sound a bit sweeter these days.

Thanks for the input. I'll take a look in a bit.

my stage 1 upgrade will be replacing the front mids and tweets with better quality direct fit drivers that require no modification/drilling and fully reversible.

my stage 2 will be the underseats and dynamat door panels.

final stage will be a multi ch amp that powers all the above.

everything needs to be reversible (except dynamat).

so far i have yet to find any mids that are a factory fit for the front doors because of the funky integrated bracket so i am waiting....

Focal makes a plug and play... But I heard they're inferior to the standard Focal specs. For instance, their 4" BMW mid designed for the BMW is half the weight of a 100KRS... You're paying for a pre-made BMW bracket.

I posted the links earlier in this thread.

While it weighs half as much as 100KRS it costs 1/3 so you might be paying for a bracket but the BMW one is still a lot better than HK or standard audio.

also the premade bracket doesn't fit the f15 door mid drivers which needs a different bracket. the focal tweeters and sub will fit.

currently there are no speakers that are plug an play for f15 doors because they use a different bracket than mids of other BMW speakers from the last 10 years.

They will fit although the F15 may not be listed.

I replaced my mid and tweeter with Focal 100KRS. It was a very budget friendly way of upgrading the crap HK speakers that come with the vehicle. I'm going in phases and replacing the amp and ultimately moving the said speakers to the rear doors and having a custom door panel fabricated to house a 6.5" driver.

However, if you're on a tight budget, but still want a better sound, I hear a night and day difference (without replacing the amp) between the stock front door speakers and the Focals, which are literally about 7 times the weight.

If budget is not much of a concern, you can check out Stunnaz setup... It's fantastic and similar to what I'm currently piecing together.

Let me know if you have any questions... The place I bought the speakers from are an authorized Focal retailer and always have the best price hands down. They have a website, but it's always best to call and speak with them. I can give you the contact info to the guy I've been working with for years... He'll take about 25% off the online price.

1. how do you mount the mids? did you have to make any holes? the stock HK are mounted on an elaborate bracket--did you just drill holes in the door panel for them?

2. Do you use the stock grill or the focal one?

3. do you use the crossover? or just splice the factory speaker cables, since the signal from amp is already crossed over?

The installer machined an exact replica of the focal bracket, which is nothing elaborate... just 3 holes vs. the standard 4. He told me fabricating the bracket took about 5 minutes. He's sending me pics tomorrow, but here are a few pics of the stock speaker.

Stayed with the stock grill. The Focal grill is surprisingly too big... and I like the look of the stock grill.

The crossover is sitting in the door... there's a little niche that it sits very well in. When I get the pics from the installer tomorrow, I'll post them.

The reason why I asking is because the F15 doors speakers look like below with a more complicated bracket with the mount points at a different place:

While the mid on Focal/bav and every other 'for BMW' mids are simpler like the one below. The center speakers is still using the simple bracket:

subscribed, I have MY15 X6 50i with HK and this is first mod on my list.

I had a 535i before this one and I upgraded the whole system with Match 82DSP and comp speakers also match all stealth install looks 100% stock but 100% better. DSP82 is a one of the best processors, but not the best amp. with tweaking it does the job better than anything Ive heard before better than my 991 with bose.

Love what you are doing but need to find set of PnP speakers like the Focal which is probably the best on the market along with Jehnert.

Tweeter is easy, sub is manageable as well but the mid range looks different to any other BMW speaker i've seen so far.

Keep up the good work

are there instructions available for removing the trim piece to change tweeters? That's my biggest issue with the HK system as the tweeters are metal dome and sound fairly harsh. Swapping for a silk dome tweeter...

tweeters should be easy. use the plastic trim tool for center. for the rest remove door panel and then the housing corner trim. looks same as all other bmw tweeters...

Here are some pics from my install. I may start a separate thread if I go down the road that will warrant some exposure. Thought I'd share here to start.

Nice now someone need to scan and 3d print that bracket !!!!

basically a bracket that has 7 screw points on the speaker end (for both 3 and 4 hole speakers) and 3 points to match the factory holes on the other end and the thickness being the same thickness as the bracket.

i wish i had a 3d printer so i could give it a go.

I can ask the installer to fabricate another and I can ship it to you. You interested in me asking?
