HK rear deck speaker issues?

.

On a couple of music selections, played quite loudly, I heard buzzing coming from the
rear, and thought one of the HK rear door midrange speakers was blown...

So when I got home, I played that selection again, and got in the back to listen carefully
to see if it was the left door or the right door speaker... to my surprise, it was both the
rear deck speakers on the sides very near where the retractable cargo cover sits.

I didn't even know there were speakers there! ... Also, they don't seem blown, they
were just overdriven... so they are the weakest link in the audio system, since all the
other speakers could handle that volume level and more.
  1. Anyone have similar problems?
  2. Are the HK rear deck speakers the same as the standard audio?
  3. Can they be disabled?
  4. Any ideas on upgrading just these?

TIA
Glenn

ok I answered #2 myself, the hifi (std) tophifi (hk) and highend (b&o) rear deck (D-Pillar)
speakers are all different (see link and pics) ... in fact the hifi(std) doesn't seem to
have any speakers there at all

So, I should run the same music selection with the speaker set out of the car, to
see if it is the plastic vent cover that is buzzing, or the speakers

If it is the speakers ... I could either upgrade to the B&O midranges for $118 x 2
... or just install a good infinity pair that is the same size

ideas?

I'll take a shot at this. Not being a "true" audiophile, I would think a change in speakers would be a start. I did a speaker change in my AMG several years back and it made a world of difference. Not knowing how good the speakers are in the X5 I would only guess that changing speakers might be the proper course.
I have the HK system on mine and don't have a buzz at all, but I am thinking on changing the speakers probably next sprring.

I've got the HK system also. No buzzing from mine, either.

Question

Hi Glenn,

i have these issues too.
Is your problem solved or not - if yes HOW ?
It comes from the D-pillar speakers (both sides).

Regards,
Oscar

Removing D-pillar covers

Hi all,
does anybody know how to remove the D-pillar covers ?
I want to check the D-pillar Harman Kardon speakers because they
are buzzing.
Pictures/videos would be appreciated !

Regards,
Oscar

The pillar covers are attached with plastic tabs. Simply pull with force to remove. I would get a few extra tabs from your dealer, because you will break a few pulling it off. If it were me, I'd simply unplug those speakers. 95% of what you hear as the driver is coming from the front speakers, anyway.

Thanks jugdish,

but I disagree with simply unplugging those speakers because my X5 and Harman Kardon were much too expensive for such a mischief.
The HK Logic7 system is per se very good if ALL speakers are working
fine.

Oscar

Would this not be a warrantable item? I'd just put it in the dealer's hands before you get in there and mess around.

I asked my BMW dealer,
BMW will solve this issue on goodwill.
Does nobody but me have the rear speaker D-pillar issues ?

Hi Oscar ... the buzzing I heard was only when the stereo was at the super loudest settings... after a while it stopped buzzing, so I never asked to have it fixed ... sorry I cannot be of more help...good luck!
