My Check Engine Light came on

Does anyone have any idea why my check engine light came on after owning the X5 for 4 days. All systems are OK, i adjusted the gasoline cap and still the light is on.

Couple options:

1) go to dealership and find your sales person, meet them and make them walk you to the service dept. let them know you have yet to fill out your survey...... that will get his/her attention.

2) skip the BS in #1 and go to service department (SD), go directly to SD, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

#3 and the rest would be sarcastic stick that i'll skip

In all seriousness, please do post what you find out from dealer as it may help someone else.

If you don't have an OBD2 plug/reader, you can go to pretty much any auto parts store and they will scan your car for free and tell you what the code is. That would be a first step to getting help here.

And if that wasn't a typo and you really have an X4, you should probably post your question here:

The X4 and X5 are different platforms.

Is this your first car? Use an odb2 reader and see what code the x5 is throwing. If you don't own one stop by AutoZone or other autoparts store they'll pull codes for free

Ok, so first of all I think you need to buy some OBD tool to be able to see all errors and their descriptions and clear them if needed. You can also code many functions very easily. Here's a good informational video:

Secondly - I'm pretty sure it's something related to a misfire or fuel cap not closed etc. In any case - we can guess, but it's better to operate with facts. Please do buy good BMW OBD tool - it will save you a lot of time and money. Trust me this check engine light is not first and not last

engine light on

Hello, I'm reading above and have same issue. I purchased my X5 S35i 48k miles on Sunday, yesterday noticed engine light is on. Went through vehicle info in the system and everything is "OK". Opened gas cap twice and re-sealed, light still on. I will purchase a OBD2 reader online, any suggestion which brand to purchase?

It could literally be anything. An OBD2 scanner is a great investment and can be used in just about all modern vehicles. I personally use an OBDLink MX Bluetooth.

engine code (gas cap)

Thank you "Rotzy", I ordered the OBD2 code reader. In the meantime, I went to O'Reilly's and their scanner reflected P0456 evaporation emission system leak detected (very small). So its the gas cap, any suggestions besides purchasing a new cap? Also, is there a type of gas cap that seals better to prevent these issues?

I would first check to make sure the existing cap is tight. If it was loose, tighten it and the code should go away.

If you are going to replace the cap, stick with an OEM BMW part..
