Continental Extremecontact Sport tire review

I put these tires on almost 9 months ago and have driven more than 10k miles on them so thought I'd give a review.

When the factory RFTs on my 50i wore out I decided to switch to non-RFTs and started looking at available options. I decided to stick with summer tires because it rarely snows or gets really cold where I live in the south. I had tried Nitto Invos in the past on my E70 and didn't like them at all so started looking at other options.

Continental's DWS seems to be quite popular but it's all season, so that was out. I would've loved to buy Michelin PSS or the new PS4 but they weren't available in stock 20" sizes back then. Then I came across Continental's Extremecontact Sport which seemed promising from the reviews I read, although none were from X5 owners. Still, I decided to give them a shot.

From the get-go they've been very quiet and I haven't noticed any increase in tire noise yet. They completely transformed the ride by making it soft and comfortable. Dry grip is excellent, but due to the softer sidewall the turn in is noticeably dull and diminishes the sportiness of the drive. Since this is my family vehicle I wasn't too concerned about that.

Where this tire really shines is in the wet. Driving through very heavy rains brought in by hurricane Irma was a breeze. There was minimal hydroplaning and the car felt planted to the road. I even had the opportunity to drive through 1.5" snow and, as expected, they didn't perform well. But still, I was able to drive over black ice and snow and able to go where I needed to without ending up in a ditch. As far as looks go, I really like the tread pattern and it reminds me of the pattern on Michelin's PSS.

The only negative I can think of is that these tend to develop flat spots if not driven on for several days, especially when the weather is cold. But this goes away within a mile or two of driving.

Even though Michelin PS4 is an undeniably better tire, I'd have a hard time justifying paying the premium for it (for my X5). Next time around I'll most likely end up getting these again.

Excellent, thoughtful review, thanks! BTW, I just installed the new Michelin PS4’s on my 2015 750i and they are supurb. Smooth, very quiet, great traction. Also, I took a 575 mile trip last week and achieved +2 mpg over my P Zero RFs...very pleased.

Thanks for the review. I was doing tire search online yesterday and compared the Extremecontact Sport and PS4. the ExtremeContact Sport has higher tread rate and much cheaper than PS4. Good to know that someone uses this tire on X5 and happy about it.

I have yet to try them on my E92 M3 but from what I can tell they're as good, if not better, than the PSS they replaced.

You're right, they don't.

The PS4 in X5 sizes are quite expensive. It costs even more than the factory RFTs. Continentals seem like a bargain compared to them.

I bought the ExtremeContact Sports back in March of 2017. I love them. They inspire confidence. I miss them now that I have my winters on.

thank you for sharing and good to know Extremecontact is preform very well for X5/ X6 20" spec.

don't know why it is so hard to find 275/40/20 from Michelin with reasonable price.

Thanks!

I recently bought an E70 (yes, I know this is the F15/16 forum) X5M, which came with both the original wheels with Bridgestone RFTs on them and narrower, non-staggered M wheels with all-season tires. I just swapped over, and I think one of the RFTs may have a leak, and since they're not repairable I was looking for reviews of these tires from X5 drivers, and yours is the only one I can find, so thanks!

I REALLY don't understand why the car has both sets of RFT tires - the car was ordered with the spare tire option and has a tire and jack and everything in the back. As Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does..."

If the car is mostly driven by women with kids, run flat tire is a good choice. It is not safe for them to be stranded somewhere especially bad neighborhood.
