Quite a novice!
I always start my car first before coding.

Depends what option you use, E-sys or Bimmercode. Bimmercode recomends coding with the engine shut off, E-sys, it is recommended to use it with the engine running (to avoid running out of electrical power). There is also Carly but i have not tried it and do not know for sure how it works.

I got Bimmercode, so engine shut off also means ignition off too?

No, ignition must be on. I also coded with the engine running, so it can be done. It will throw some errors that automatically clear up once you restart the car. Once its done and the car is restarted, everything should be ok (might need to setup clock again).

This just started on mine. No factory warranty but still have some time left on CPO warranty. Anyone know if this would be covered under CPO?

I hope it does, but you will need to read the fine print.

Just lube the steering column, I used a silicone based spray and it's quiet and works fine. Split the plastic column around the steering wheel and on the left side there is some gears and elbows, just spray them good. Worked for me, YMMV.
