It's funny that I found this thread because the cluster stays white at night and I would like it to turn orange like it is supposed to. Although I do think there is something wrong with mine because not only do the gauges stay white at night but the idrive screen doesn't dim at night, the HUD is pretty dim during the day even with the brightness turned all the way up. I drove my friend's 2014 328d and his HUD was a lot brighter during the day than mine.

I would love this too - not a fan of the orange in any of my BMW's. Personal preference I know, but I'd code it if I could. I think the problem would be that you would get it to stay white by turning off the sensor that turns it orange and then it would stay super white daytime bright and not be dimmable.

LOL exactly. Funny how many people come to a car modifying site and then explain why you should not make your car the way you prefer it to be. =)

If you light the instruments in the cockpit with green or blue light, the light will reduce the sensitivity of the rod cells in your retina, greatly reducing your ability to see dimly-lit things out in the darkness outside the plane. ... Red lights do not overwhelm your eyes during night or low light conditions. This is why they use it in planes, so it would apply to cars in certain conditions too.

For those of you that love the orange - we are happy for you. For those of us that do not like it - we would like to find a way to keep the white that we enjoy more. We won't force it on you.....we promise! =)

Man this thread is all over the place.
Just FYI i think "some" people may be confusing the "Night Vision" feature available on the vehicles versus night visibility. |

A simple research will show that the amber/orange/red lights do not interfere with night time vision ( NOT nightvision ) which has been proven in military applications.
I prefer the low key non flashy blue or white interior dash lights.. it fatigues the eyes during night time drives.. in city/metro drives where you have ambient lights all around it doesn't affect you as much if at all. This only really applies on dark roads.

I'm LOLing because it kills me how many people come to a modding site and tell people why they shouldn't mod. if you couldn't care less then why reply to a thread asking how to do it??? A PILOT already chimed in that this is not true and if it was, why does BMW NOT use it in all their cars???? I just don't get why people feel the need to jump in and defend BMW's decisions. We don't care why it is orange, we just prefer it to be white. No one is asking you to change yours. If you like it orange, awesome. But just like the thousands of coding posts on this site, we would just like something different than BMW selected. Try and research a remote start on this site. You get 1 post about it and 800 replies why BMW is right to not offer it clogging the thread. If I don't want to change something, I just don't and move on I guess. For every special ops nite vision expert quote, there is an opposing one. https://www.autoblog.com/2017/02/28/...-illumination/ Who cares, if someone likes their dash purple, more power to them. This site is all about customization for personal preference.

Bottom line, someone asked for help coding their X5 the easy way..
I tried to research how to change in the advanced mode using BimmerCode. If any it will be under the Instrument Cluster ECU. But could not find anything related to the color of light. I would suggest trying your luck by asking their support. Hope this helps.. |

Try this thread:
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...5#post18088006 It seems you can change a value or two under 3007. Hope this helps. |

As an aside, I actually leave my navigation in the “day mode” all the time vs. the automatic change to the darker screen for nighttime viewing. Some may contend it puts out too much glare by leaving in day mode; however, I find it easier to read than the darker screen. To each, their own. |

To throw another rat in the blender, video editing studios use bias lighting to see colors better and reduce eye fatigue in low light. This was developed by Industrial Light and Magic studios. The proper bias light is 6500 kelvin and a CRI of 98 or higher. In those applications white is better. Oh, and my Infiniti is white light for the guages. But ... I'm in the "to each his own" camp as I think in real life it's not going to make a bit of difference.
The bigger problem is having your wife sitting next to you reading articles on her iPhone while the screen is in torch mode. |
