So apparently you can drive the X5 without a FOB

I started the car. Went in the house gave my wife the keys... or so I thought. We drove to dinner went to lock the door and realize the keys were at home!!!

Dinner was 10 miles away...luckily there was uber.

But didn’t know the car let’s u drive off without the FOB

Lesson learned

I know. Which totally kills the idea of leaving the car on if you’re just running into Starbucks or something. I thought it was an anti theft feature to not let the car drive away without the FOB.

You can leave the car on...just lock the door.

Well, I guess that can be done as a last resort. I'm just wondering if it will let you lock the car if keys are not there and also you'll probably won't be able to open it without keys either

There should have been a notification on the iDrive Screen about the FOB not being in the car... You haven't seen it?

I had a girl do this with her Hyundai Genesis about a month ago. She started the car at her house, went back in for something and left the keys by mistake, drove to work, went to leave work and couldn’t find her keys. Called me because she thought they were locked in her car. I unlocked her car, no keys. Her dad called and said they were on the kitchen counter lol.

Here's another thing, if you shut the car off and lock it and leave a dog in there, the slightest movement sets the alarm off. Found that out the hard way.

I was responding more to the running inside for coffee statement.

Can't lock car without the key...for sure.

There is a procedure in the user's manual for locking the car with someone inside. You just have to read it.

I figured this out at the airport once, reached and realized no keys. Oops.

I saw it but assumed my wife had the key... as she was able to put it into drive.

Our Escalade makes it VERY clear that your FOB exited the vehicle...and will keep reminding you like you're some kind of idiot...which I am...so I don't hold it against her.

Doesn't sound very clear if the OP was able to drive 10 miles without knowing it.

By very clear, our Escalade screams at you...I'm sure the OP didn't miss any screaming chimes and bells.

Press lock once and then again within 10 seconds and it disables internal alarm sensor so dog wont set it off.

I consider the notification message and chimes on the iDrive Screen sufficient.
The fact that people choose to ignore it is not a car issue at all.

This is why I find it hard to believe the OP was able to drive 10 miles without noticing he didn't have a key. Dash lights up along with idrive screen with a message warning that the keys are not detected.

Same here, no key/fob all the way to my son's flag-football game. Had to ask my dad to rescue me (drive home to get my fob).
