Brembo on a budget! Let's make x5 great again :)
Now you can just buy MPBK for $2500 and then buy drilled rotors and for mere $3-3.5k you'll have a nice brakes! You can even go and buy a Brembo set with drilled rotors included for $5-9k
However, for those of us who want to improve looks and performance and do it on a budget - this is the way to go guys! Part numbers are: 34116789342 Front Right Caliper OEM (about $350-400 used) 34116789341 Front Left Caliper OEM 34112284901 Front OEM F85 X5M drilled 395mm rotor Left ($283 new) 34112284902 Front OEM F85 X5M drilled 395mm rotor Right Total for a front set: $1365 - which is as budget as it can ever be for a OEM parts and a Brembo calipers - that's a best bang for the buck badass look you can get for your money if you want to roll like a boss So a small update for those of you who will decide to do this little project: it turns out there are alternative F85 rotors we can use: EBC company makes GD series black zinc coated slotted and dimpled rotors - same exactly dimensions as oem F85 only a bit cheaper: drilled and slotted GD1813 Fronts - $228 for both front rotors! http://www.autoanything.com/brakes/77A3068A3886088.aspx GD1814 Rears - $209 for both rear rotors! https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-..._106652_0_4024 or just slotted (not drilled) USR1813 front (haven't googled price for those yet) USR1814 rear Also, all prices are listed at the moment I wrote this, they may change so please check everything yourselves P.S. you can keep rear stock 50i calipers and just change rotors to drilled and slotted ones for looks - rockauto sells them for $118 each - part # CENTRIC 12734095R and CENTRIC 12734095L (Right rear rotor and Left rear rotor) http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/b...hub,rotor,1896 These are OEM BMW Calipers that were stock on a E70/E71 X5M X6M (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 if I'm not mistaken). They are Brembo 4-pot calipers and are known for it's durability and reliability. They are not really rare as a lot of X5M and X6M end up in accidents (probably while drifting and speeding in Mexico). Their loss - your rare find! You can find them right now on ebay - many salvage yards are selling them via ebay. You may have to wait for them to pop up - but I'm sure you can find them within a couple weeks top. Average price for a set of fronts $800 or $350-400 for each individually (left, right) Mine came from 2012 X5M with 60k miles (front collision), came with oem bmw M pads, clips, sensors. They bolt on plug-n-play without issues on your x5 (doesn't matter 35i/35d or 50i). You will need a bigger 395mm rotors - your smaller x5 rotors are a no go. Now here's the thing, stock MPBK come with 395mm rotors, but they are a bit boring. And since I have to buy rotors anyway - why not sport for something better looking eh? So I decided to buy F85 X5M rotors - they are 395mm and come drilled stock! I found them for $283 each (which is a good deal, considering some places still sell them for $445 each) here: https://www.bmwpartsnow.com/oem-part...PWxheWVyXzE%3D These bad boys together with Brembo calipers will fill up your 20 inch rim completely and will look tits! I'm planning to sand them down myself with just a sandpaper and then paint them red using "Real Red" VHT Caliper paint: https://www.amazon.com/VHT-SP731-Bra.../dp/B000CPJLVC So these bad boys just came in today in mail, packed in a box straight from salvage yard lol. To the untrained eye these look like junk piece of $hit, but to me they look like a jackpot Last edited by DuSh; 02-20-2018 at 08:16 PM.. |

Hey guys, so here's how it should look with F85 drilled rotors, except mine will be RED.
It's not my picture, mine just arrived today and I still have to paint them red Last edited by DuSh; 02-09-2018 at 01:31 AM.. |

The beauty of this set IMHO is that you can paint them yourself any color red, green, lemon, gold, burnt orange, light blue or whatever - AND you can put either Brembo or ///M on them and it will be legit (no one will blame you are making it look like something it isn't lol - because these are Brembo and they have ///M on them from factory stock)
Some additional info: If you get puncture and you are worried about your 18 inch space saver spare not fitting over Brembo calipers (since you need minimum 19 inch to clear) - you just put 18 inch spare on rear and move rear (your current stock 19/20 inch rim) wheel to front - that's all Here's front pads for this set from $8 to $130 - pick your poison: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...brake+pad,1684 And even a caliper repair kit $7 that is basically a set of rubber seals for pistons: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...epair+kit,1720 Last edited by DuSh; 02-09-2018 at 02:11 AM.. |

Rotor surface area is double the size of my 50i rotors lol, let alone even smaller 35i. 4 pot calipers vs 1 pot - that's another difference and of course quality of calipers is superb IMHO. I'll make sure to provide a review as soon as I paint them and install. It will take couple weeks for me to finish everything - since I'm in a exam session right now.
In general judging by E70/E71 forum reviews performance is very good, it's a noticeable improvement over stock 50i brakes (even more so over 35i). They will not set any Nurburgring records haha, but people who upgraded say this is how x5 should have come from factory to begin with That been said 395mm rotors are almost as big as my previous 3 series bmw rims lol P.S. It will probably need to be coded as well, I'm still going to find it out, but AFAIK coding will adjust proper brake fluid pressure up for bigger calipers Last edited by DuSh; 02-09-2018 at 06:29 AM.. |

Keep in mind when buying used calipers that you may or at least should rebuild them (shims, seals, lines etc.) since it's already apart and off the vehicle then you may have to powder coat again so after everything is said and done you may in line or at least close to the original cost of a new MPBK. You never want to cut corners on your vehicle but definitely not on Brakes, Tires, or Suspension. In that order.

Do you need new brackets for the brembo calipers and X5M protection plates due to the larger rotor size?

No brackets needed - they bolt on right on instead of stock cast calipers. Bigger protection plates are probably good idea, but I'm going to stick with my stock 50i ones - they are almost as large as F85 rotors so I'm ok with that (they will not cover a small portion of rotors, but I decided to live with it lol)

MPBK doesn't come with drilled rotors and that is half the fun taken away - one of the reasons why I'm doing it - for looks. So MPBK will be $2500 + drilled rotors = $3k This setup will be half that. However, you are right MPBK will be new kit - so it's up to everyone to decide. For some it makes sense to spent more and buy new kit, but for me - a poor medical student with huge debts - I can use any leftover money for lot of other mods lol (I always tell myself that if money was no issue - I would be driving Lamborghini Urus and not BMW, but here I am stuck with what I have lol) |

i understand, simply sharing some input from my own experiences over the years. i built a custom project a very long time ago and i had to source various parts. i tried to save a few dollars in the end it cost more because i wound up buying a whole new brembo 355 kit and had to sell the used bits i purchased to try to piece together a "kit"... when you go to install the rear rotors from the X5M/X6M you will notice there is no way to use the slot designated for a set screw. it is not an issue and just go about the build as usual.

MPBK requires coding too, if I remember correctly. I assume your budget project will be the same for best performance.

How to clean a caliper DIY:
Just a DIY rebuild video, process is easy, but will require couple hours of dedicated time: And a rebuild kit for Brembo caliper: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/b...epair+kit,1720 It includes square cut seals and dust boots |

Yes. The oem spare is a 19" with the bbk. In fact those second pics posted here of the black rims with red caliper and the one above it are 19". The 20" is the first picture.

Washed them a bit in a bucket with liquid soap and water. Tried to depress each piston to check if they are seized or not, I thought it would take great force, but to my surprise it's doable by a thumb without too much force - brake fluid came out as a result from hose - so I guess it's all good! Rubber dust boots look good too - I don't even think it needs changing (but may still do it while I'm at it)
What is new to me is how simple and reliable construction is: 2 pins, 1 clip and that's it - you can take out pads even without removing caliper on the car. Brilliant design by Brembo (I guess all bbk are like that lol) Caliper has 2 bleeding valves covered by rubber caps. I checked them and they look like new! Interesting that pads are quite big and pretty much 80% left - tempting to just reuse everything Also took off brake line from caliper - came off easily, just needed 9/16 wrench (isn't German cars in metric guys? I'm new to this). So far my impression is that it's safe to buy something like this (mine is from 60k miles salvage car 2012 E70 X5M). These calipers are build to last IMHO, worst case scenario you will need to change worn rubber boot - that's it Last edited by DuSh; 02-09-2018 at 09:10 PM.. |
