2014 BMW X5 Recall: Faulty Child Safety Locks
BIMMERPOST NEWS 2014 BMW X5 Recall: Faulty Child Safety Locks NHTSA press release: Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC SUMMARY: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2014 X5 SAV vehicles manufactured December 12, 2013, through March 10, 2014, and equipped with the Soft Close Automatic (SCA) option. The rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured to correct tolerances and when the inside door handle is pulled, the previously engaged child safety lock can disengage. CONSEQUENCE: A disengaged child safety lock would allow the rear seat occupant to pull the door handle twice and open the door while the vehicle is parked or in motion, increasing the risk of injury. REMEDY: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear side door locks and any affected door locks will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in May 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. |

So they got it right for 3 or 4 months, then wrong for 3, then fixed it again? Anyone else confused as to why it wouldn't affect cars built from the start of production through March 10, 2014 instead of only from 12/12/2013..? Mine was built before the issue, so I guess I'm lucky. I'll check them anyway..

Good info to know. Thanks for sharing. Fortunately, I didn't go with the soft-close door option.

They would have been making the locks much longer than 4 months, as they would have been making locks for pre-production test models, then launch and press car locks for months before the customer production started. Its not out of the ordinary for a supplier to BMW to change something in the design or manufacturing process and for problems to then arise. BMW will then work with the supplier to rectify the problem and get the solution onto the factory floor before issuing a recall to replace the defective parts already delivered. Car not yet delivered will also be put on hold to have the parts fixed before they may be delivered.

"The rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured to correct tolerances " It's a manufacturing tolerance issue, which can happen for a myriad of reasons. I worked for an aircraft manufacturer for a while. Usually, tolerance issues are due to incorrect use/manufacture of tooling or jigs. You get a new guy on the line, and they do something incorrect that no one catches because it doesn't affect normal use, or the issue is intermittent/inconsistent. Or you get a new tool, and it's not made to specifications because someone screwed up a CAD/CAM drawing. Given the nature of door lock mechanisms, it's probable that this issue doesn't affect 100% of the cars (specified by the time range) 100% of the time. Hypothetically, there's some little cog in there that has to block some other little cog, and sometimes, if you don't engage the child safety just right, the one cog doesn't block the other cog, and bam! Safety recall.
