Moving to an X5 - what should I know?

I'm currently in an F30 335d xDrive but have just confirmed my order for an F15 X5 M50d.

Excited to say the least, delivery September so hoping for a MY2017 but what else can you all tell me?

Any must have accessories or mods?

I made the same move two weeks ago. Switched from an E91 335d m-sport to to an F15 m50d. If you had the active steering, the x5 will feel a bit like you have to spin the wheel like roulette. Also, the speed experience is a lot different. I had the feeling the m50 was slow, but since my 335d was much lower to the ground, it's just between the ears. Because of the m suspension and bumper I had to slow down for curbs and speedbumps a lot. With the f15, only get your foot of the gas and let it go, you'll be fine.

Thanks, I just have servotronic in the 335 - our M135 have the VSS (active) and I'm not a big fan.

I'm hoping the X5 will feel like a rapid barge!

I am COMPLETELY happy with my F15D. If I could have ordered the M50D, as you have, then I would be even happier!

We here in the USA are very envious of markets where both the 40D & 50D are available. We are building them here, we just can't buy them.

ENJOY the drive! That little tickle you feel on your neck every now and then is just us vicariously enjoying riding along with you.

I didn't know the 50d isn't marketed in the US. It'll possibly frustrate you more to learn it cost me just a little bit more on the monthlies than the 40d (which was my original plan).

It's an immense car - such a step up in refinement!

Just make sure your friends screw mine together well please

OMG?! You are in a country where fuel (gas) is so cheap. I'm coming from a 40d with a tune, going to a 50i. My car is faster than a stock 50d, but I've driven a stock 50i - it's so much nicer. It will have a tune and an exhaust when done. Why would you want a tractor when you can have a pretend race car? 40d is only getting 23.6 mpg around town, surely a 50i won't be too much worse?!

My mileage is too high - I tested an M5 but averaged 11mpg, not viable for me!

We have a fast petrol, this is the load lugging family motor.

50i gets about 12 mpg around town.

Hi mate,

Congrats on your order no doubt you will enjoy but I was wondering if you know about the new 50d engine coming soon which has 4 turbos and is the updated version of the current 3 turbo models which it will be replacing!?

I'm watching this also.
Quad-turbo 3.0 liter will be first in the Seven series as a 2017 model followed as an offering elsewhere in 2018.

Alas I don't expect to see it as an offering for the North American market in anything other than the Seven.

I would jump on one if it became available here.

Perhaps a dumb question but is the X5 30d a twin turbo?

No!

Single turbo with a low pressure compressor on one side and the other side is the high pressure side.

M50d is a true twin turbo setup.

Later, as a 2017 model BMW will make available a quad turbo on the current 3.0 liter block.

Available in North America only is the 35d.
In other markets the 40d and 50d as well as the 25d and 30d are available. 30d elsewhere is the 35d in USA.

Thanks for the quick answer!

Yes, I meant the 35d that I am getting any day now!

SlammedR8, I would like to hear your comparison between your RR HSE / X5 diesels. These are my two picks moving forward.

Are you considering the RR HSE or RRS HSE? There is a difference between them that goes beyond the size.

I don't have my X5 yet, but after a few test drives I can say the RR is much more refined and quieter of a drive. I really don't think the 2 cars should be compared, one car is $70-80k, while the other is $110-$130k. They are in very different leagues. The RRS is more in line with the X5, and even there I would say the RR has something more special about it. The interior quality is far better, but the X5 certainly wins when it comes to the tech.

I'd heard about this just around the time I was placing the order but didn't sound like it was worth waiting all that time for. I suspect it will debut in the new shape X5 (?)

In any case the plan was to have a new car by autumn (fall!) and before the new car tax rules next year.

I looked briefly at the RRS but just could not see past the infotainment system. They are also massively expensive both list price and finance in the UK at least.

Having owned and XF I can say the JLR tech levels need a drastic makeover to come close to those of BMW. JLR has the refinement sorted bit for me, coming from an F30, the X5 feels like a Bentley!

This is an education to me - I hadn't realised the NA 35d was the single turbo version over there but instead assumed it had the same engine as my 335d (twin turbo 306bhp)

So as you say we have options for:

2.0L turbo (25d)
3.0L turbo (30d) - 286bhp I believe?
3.0L twin turbo (40d) - 313bhp
3.0L tri turbo (50d) - 380bhp

How odd that the US is restricted in this way - perhaps you guys need to fully embrace diesel so they'll give you all the options!

SlammedR8. Sorry, I men't to say RRS HSE I appreciated your input.I am on the fence between the X5 and RRS. The price between the 2 are pretty close if you just get some bare essential like good stereo and comfy seats. I,m not a techie guy (flip phone) and probably considered "over the hill", so no need for fancy electronics. I've got lots of time for test drives while VW figures out what they will do for me (13 Touareg TDI). BTW, when you build your own RRS HSE TD6 and add Meridian (825W) and tow pkg. comes out to $74,945 MSRP. So, pretty close right?

Well, it seems that all big players were already weighed in, time to have a small jest. As a new owner you will require to ask "what is this button?"
