I've had both - DCT and 6mt... Also had plenty of seat time in e46 and e60 with smg... The e60 had dinan stage 3 and paired to that smg - people have gotten motion sickness in that car... Side note - start up in garage, says 247 miles to empty, coast out of garage with foot off the gas completely, down the driveway, and it would say 245 miles to empty lol) anyways back to the transmissions...

SMG in the e60 was terrible... Lots of problems as well... SMG-II for the e46 was vastly improved, but still was a love it or hate it type thing and still jerky... Much better suited for the track as opposed to surface streets (IMO)...

Fast forward to e9x era and the DCT comes out... Nothing negative to say about it, let's be honest, who didn't get at least semi addicted to the throttle blipping during downshifts? My car was always in full M mode and always in "manual" mode with the shift knob... The 6mt in e9x left some to be desired and was thankful I didn't order it that way...

Having driven the f8x numerous times, I wasn't in love with it like I was my e92... Ended up pulling the trigger anyways but in 6mt... Hoping to get the feeling back, but can't get over the hydraulic steering feel so not too optimistic... Getrag tranny is flipping awesome... Albeit, kind of a lazy / dummy proof tranny when it's not in the highest transmission setting, but throws are decent, clutch feel not too heavy and remotely pleasant in traffic...

Debating ordering another one... But with DCT and Comp Pack... I miss being able to just hop in the car and cruise if I want, instead of being on red alert at all times...

My two cents - love both transmissions but more inclined to do DCT at this point... Would love to have both ideally...

Hopefully next gen dumbs down the electronic assist, some. That and the lack of composure in gaining traction seem to be extreme points of contention with this car.

The day BMW makes M3/4s exclusively DCT is the day you'll find me driving a Corvette or GT350.

Amen to that.

I would have loved a GT350R, but an F80 serves my practicality needs better as a 4 door. They're also basically as common as Corollas, compared to the exclusivity of the GT350's. Hopefully I can acquire one in a couple years' time.

EDIT: They're also much, much quieter. Like a vacuum compared to....a garbage disposal.

My dad and i are building an E30 318 using M3 motor as a power plant. Little bit of work with the motor, after market suspension and of course a manual tranny. Soon as a few parts get here from Germany, the motor can be assembled and put back in the car. We painted it cosmos black, ah la my 1995 E36 M3. Motor builder estimates 285hp and the last time it weighed in it was sub 2300 pounds. I'm very much looking forward to driving it soon! That may do the trick for me but will have to wait and see.

Whoa! That sounds beautiful, I'm sure you'll take some awesome photos of it. Also, take some progress pictures. I actually find those quite intriguing.

My buddy is building a wide body E30 (believe you've seen pics of it in the "cool picture thread") and it's my favorite car of all time. So much character, and a true testament to the Motorsport days of old.

It's very....ummmmm....track/drift. It's also loud AF.

Of course, that was a couple years back; it's currently a hack job in his garage undergoing the changes.

Most people don't know how to drive an SMG. Incidentally, SMG II is a less advanced version of the transmission. E60/E63s are equipped with SMG III.

If you rode with someone who has or had an SMG III and they jerk the car around, they simply can't drive it well. Period. End of story. This transmission will expose a driver that simply yanks on the paddles. It is literally garbage in, garbage out. The driver has to achieve symbiosis with the vehicle. My passengers can't believe that I am shifting the car when I am tooling about in traffic. I agree 100% that it shines on the track but it can be mastered by a driver who learns to anticipate what the car is expecting the driver to do. It is always ready to turn it up to 11. As far as reliability goes, I've had the pump and a circuit board replaced. Other than that, extremely reliable.

DCT's are very cool, as well I just miss the visceral feel on WOT shifts that you get with a single clutch gearbox.

Cheers-mk

It is. A robot actuates the clutch. No fluid coupling. No torque converter. Sequential MANUAL Gearbox.

Rumor has it the F90 will only be available in DCT... That being said, I did not enjoy the F10 M5 with the manual tranny...

But X Drive? Give and take??

I see what he did there... That's code for if you f-up and need bail money or get caught up like Jared, call one of your other "fathers..."

In regards to the SMG - I don't know if it had so much to do with driver incompetence as it did the sheer amount of power with the dinan s3... I don't know how it drove back in virginal state...

I do miss that V10 banshee wail though...

It wouldn't surprise me. Many more boy racers out there who want DCT so they can pretend to be Shumi than "purist" or "old guys" who love a proper manual. Even if that wasn't the case, it wouldn't surprise me to see BMW make that change just for streamlining production.

X drive as in 4wd. Unless i'm in a rally race or off roading i don't want 4wd.

Not saying everyone who likes and has DCT is boy racer, but they make up a large quantity of DCT owners.

Dang. well, the next generation S4 is also losing its manual gearbox, too. That was another car I had looked into; Tonka is right, though. Many boy racers are acquiring these cars. See it on F80post all the time. It's so weird.
