Wife also received this letter for her 2015, I still have yet to receive it for my 2016.
I find their claim to be BS in respect to having no technical solution. I mean, can't we just retrofit an nbt evo and atm module from a 2017 model already? If so, so can they but it
seems they want to exclude as many models from retrofitting.

If they were smart they’d do the following:
1. BEST solution - retrofit
2. NEXT BEST solution - figure out a way for smart phone app to provide data transmission and override onboard antenna for data
3. OK solution - figure out a 3rd Party way to get CarPlay etc activated at scale

If not, I’d like them to buy back the convenience options (HUD etc) for every individual car and apply a credit to a new model

They’ve basically made a durable good a consumer electronic.

This PURE WEAK SAUCE

Shame on you BMW NA

They will do nothing as good part of customers do not use it at all. Moreover, this hits only North America. Moreover, maybe hundreds of angry customers. But if they retrofit at least one car, they will have crazy number of requests from other owners.

I have not received anything as of yet. I am already talking to a lawyer friend of mine. She does not think there is much we can do due to technology evolving so rapidly. We're still talking about it…

What we all need to think about too is that BMW had their lawyers dig into this to make sure they are safe. Since this is a convenience issue, and not a safety issue they can for sure win this easily. I will post once I get more info 🤷🏽

I'm trying to find documents or something boasting about this technology being one of their selling points for these vehicles. If ya'll happen to find something send it my way. Need to gather all I can to see what can be done 🤷🏽

I'm just as upset as many of you, and if there is a way forward for them to not screw us then let's see 🤷🏽

The loss of SOS calling capability could be considered a safety issue. Though of course most cars don't have that so it would be a difficult argument to say that safety has been impaired.

Installing a MMI bow will not solve the whole problem, as you cannot replace the remote services with Carplay.

And this approach from BMW happened before. In Europe all the CIC equipped cars lost connectivity many years ago without any reason...

True. But some features like updating maps and traffic data you get on the iPhone and can replace the inbuilt map that is updated. You will have to call the BMW assistant via phone vs pressing the button.

I’ve now got a 2010 x535d and 2013 M5 that lost services in the last round and now a 2016 x5 loosing this time. It’s complete c$&p and having benefited from the emergency Assist calls in the past it’s really frustrating since BMW claims to care about safety.

Yep got the e-mail as well. I don't think I would go BMW route again. For the cost of their cars customer service doesn't exist.

This is literally happening, however Apple is not saying you can't connect, network providers are. (Just like our current issue with BMW).

FWIW, they can just change provider, no? It' just att shutting down 3G...

why can't they change their contract to T mobile let's say?

I'm pretty sure BMW's cellular devices aren't "carrier locked" like a cellphone...

The 3g modem might not have the frequencies for TMobile 3g. Not that it matters, TMobile is shutting down their 3g in April of '22. Even if they weren't, they're all reallocating their 3g frequencies to 5g so 3g reception is going to be minimal. And it's all going to be volte for voice which doesn't run on 3g tech.

Is there something on there for contacting them in case you have questions? I still haven't received mine.

Here is the message:
Quote:
Dear RED_Y_,

There are important ConnectedDrive service changes affecting your 2014 X5, Vehicle Identification Number ending in 5335.

The decision to phase out 3G network technology was made at the discretion of the respective cellular carriers and lies beyond the control of BMW.

As a result of the sunset of 3G service by wireless carrier partners, by February 2022 your vehicle will no longer be able to receive any ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist services, such as BMW Assist eCall, Advanced Real‑Time Traffic Information, Remote Services and BMW Online, depending on your BMW model.

Unfortunately, for your vehicle, there is not a technology upgrade available that would allow you to continue to use ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist services after the expiration of your contract, or February 2022, whichever occurs first.

For more details, please refer to the 3G Cellular Technology Discontinuation Frequently Asked Questions or contact BMW Customer Relations at 800‑831‑1117.
