How's the reliability for a 2014 or 2015 X5 50i?

Hello guys,

I am looking to buy an used fully loaded F15 X5 50i with M package, which I am planning to keep for at least 7 years or longer. I toyed with the notion of leasing, but what I discovered is that I am not a leasing guy. I dont care about getting the newest model every 3-5 years; and I hate the limitations (miles, body care etc). I just want to own the car and drive it for a long time or until the wheels come off.

Is 2014 or 2015 a good year to own a X5 50i for a long term without extend warranty? I know the N55 would be a better buy compare to the N63TU. But I miss the V8 power so much.

Did BMW fix the injectors or Drivetrain malfunction problems on the model year of 2015?

I am hoping to hear from current owners that bought their car and share your experience in terms of repairs, maintenance etc.

Thanks in advance

My 14 F15 50i had valve stem seals fail on 3 cylinders at 46k. Upper oil pan gasket leak too. All repaired under warranty. Then just under 50k was burning oil and found out had scoring in 2 different cylinders so whole new motor and top end replaced under warranty. I would have never bought this car without a warranty. BTW I also got an extended warranty so I'm good to 100k

Keep in mind that whatever is left on a warranty on a 14 transfers to a new owner. The 15 doesn't AFAIK

Such a horrible story. Is the valve stem seals fail a common problem?

I live in Canada, so I think the warranty can be transferred to next owner.

The warranty transfers to new owners, it's the maintenance that they stopped in 2015, but you can pay to transfer it. I did that when I picked up my 2015 50i. I've put about 20k miles on it since I've gotten it, had about 8k when I got it. Only issue I've had so far is a bad O2 sensor, which my SA said could have been cause by the Dinan tune...they replaced it with no issues. Had low oil once, about 500 miles before my 2nd oil change. Other than that, she's been perfect so far, but I've got an extended warranty to 108k miles just in case...

As for 2014/2015 decision, I'd shoot for a 2015 if you can. Second model year so less chance of any issues and they updated the transmission:

Technical update for the 8-speed automatic transmission leading to better efficiency and faster acceleration.

Valve stem seals is a very common problem for the N63TU and the N63 before it. It has to do with the heat the turbos produce, breaks down the material used in the seals

Same here - got financing for 6 years for 20k miles 50i CPO 2014 - price is $649 per month For that price I can't complain

Gotta pay to play. I have a usual 4 year warranty and 1 year (or is it 2 years for 2014 CPO?) CPO warranty on top of that, BUT I didn't opted for extended warranty. Yes, I'm risking, but I prefer to keep extra $4-6k and use it when/if I'll need it. YMMV

Yes, with n63tu (tu - stands for technical update) most of issues were fixed, including injectors

I'm tuned (flash) and so far so good (knock on the wood 3 times lol). 50i is designed to be driven spiritedly and lower oil changes intervals (4-5k miles unlike BMW dealer 10-15k intervals - lol that's a direct road to an engine failure IMHO) are critical, but other than that it's statistically solid. Note I said statistically, because valve stem seals were supposedly fixed in n63tu (did a lot of research on that topic), but as another forum member mentioned he was unfortunate to still get issues. IMHO it's within statistical error - if you take n62 it was much more prevalent. In n63 it was already rare (like 5% or so) and in n63tu after technical update I really hope it's no more than 1%

Just my opinion

personally i think its the rubber bmw uses for all its seals. because valve stem seals, valve cover gaskets, vaccum pump gaskets, etc even fail on the previous non-turbo v8 engines which dont get hot.

Good point.

My 50i has been relatively good. Had fouling in a spark plug, which caused car to shudder when accelerating a few months ago. And a few days ago the engine light came on, although ALL SYSTEMS OK is what the iDrive says. Will get the car checked next week.

Nonetheless, the 50i is a blast to drive! I think it sounds better than the X5M

70000 trouble free miles on my 2014 with 50i. My 2004 X5, 4.4 went 200000 miles and is still on the road almost 3 years later.

Finally and thanks you for sending us a good vibe!! Been reading some unfortunate reviews about the 50i and got me a little upset and depressed

To be honest, For the V8 power, I can live with extra oil consumption, or maybe $2-3k/yr repair bills.

But more then that, will be uncomfortable for me.

I'm sure there are many 50i owners are driving without a warranty

I'm just a little skeptical the cost won't be around 2-3k when there's a problem

Once again, statistically majority of 50i owners (even in previous generation) had no increased oil consumption and no major issues. Many had no issues at all and drove 100k+ miles happily and are still driving

Remember you are mainly hearing about bad things - rarely someone is going to create a thread about how happy he is that he has no issues, but if someone had any problem - threads will get created - that's the nature of forums - there's just a big bias towards bad things and issues

Ok, I'm about to pull the trigger this weekend. It's a 2015, fully loaded with 35k miles. But it doesn't come with any extended warranty.

So am I crazy to take it without warranty?

My 50i is an E70...1 month after CPO expiration, the upper oil pan gasket started to leak. $3K repair at BMW dealer. Sounds like BMW is going to goodwill 70% of it when it goes back in this coming Monday, since it was so close to warranty expiration.

With that said, after the above mentioned diagnosis, I toyed with selling it for something else, but ultimately bought an extended warranty for 3 more years. I really didn't want to sell it - nothing short of another V8 powered higher end SUV would have made me happy. And buying an extended warranty was much cheaper than selling/trading in and getting into something newer.
