I had the same dilemma when choosing my new F15. I ended up going with the diesel. Mainly for the fuel economy. I put on an average of 45,000 kms (27k miles) a year...that's a heck of a lot of premium fuel to pump. The power delivery on the diesel is great, very smooth and as said above, mated to the 8-speed it always seems to be in the right gear. You really can't go wrong with either one, just comes down to which is better suited for your needs.

I have been struggling with the same dilemma..but I am going to choose the 50i for two reasons. This X5 will replace the '13 X5M, and I don't want to feel a big drop-off relative to what we are accustomed to. More importantly, I am concerned with Minnesota's full court press on Biodiesel. It will diminish the efficiency play, but more importantly, the seemingly inevitable B20 could have negative consequences to reliability. Look up what Mercedes thinks about exceeding B5 and the potential warranty implications...

OP, given the fact you said you tow a boat, and put the vehicle under load the diesel is the way to go. Sure you can get the v8 and watch the gas just glug away. The absolutely worst thing is having to always stop to fill up regardless of how much it puts a dent in your wallet.
I use to have the v8 M3 and hated the thing . Not because of the car itself but more the fact you had to constantly stop and fill the thing up, No thanks. Give me a diesel. |

Decision
Thanks for all the input, some really good things to think about. I am pretty sure I am going to go with the diesel. Its not that I couldn't afford putting in all the gas but it really comes down to which will serve my purpose better. I travel to our cabin in the northern part of our state frequently and its all highway, sure nice to get there and back on less than a tank full. I have had the sports cars in the past, time to be a little more practical.

Put practicality aside when considering this car. If you want that, get a Tourag or a jeep. They do a fine job.
As an owner of an X6M with a trailer hitch, I am most concerned at the possibility of seeing anything I tow bouncing sideways on the road in the rear view mirror. They are just that fast. I get 19.6 mpg on the highway @80 mph. Not bad for 555 hp and 505 ft pd of torque. Average is around 15 mpg, all after 111,000 miles of driving. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Since you have decided on a BMW, most of the decision is now related to your budget. If you have some flexibility, get the 5.0 (or //M) for sure. If it is a stretch, get the 3.5. Either way, you will be happy with your purchase. You just can't make a bad decision here. Wishing you a great day J |
