Extended Smartphone Connectivity

In Canada the 2015 X5 packages have been altered. No longer does the Connected Drive package include Extended Smartphone Connectivity. It is now a standalone option.

Can anyone explain to me exactly what Extended Smartphone Connectivity is? I'm trying to figure out whether or not it will be something I need.

If this is the 6NS option that you are talking about then it includes the holder in the centre console that you use for a snap in adapter as well as allowing two phones to be connected via bluetooth at the same time and streaming audio and album art over bluetooth.
You also need it for the Office functionality as well I believe based on MY2014.
Voice Control may also require it too.

The whole config around 6NS is a nightmare, my dealer didn't really know what it bought you and if I hadn't checked with BMW myself I could have ended up without it when I needed it for other stuff I had specced.

In the UK, you need this option in order for SMS messages to be read by the car and displayed on screen/read out over the speakers (the phone can be connected by Bluetooth - doesn't need to be in the cradle).
Not sure if that is true for other markets but it is certainly the case for the UK market

I don't believe that's actually true. I do not connect my phone via and cradle and I get my iPhone messages fine. There is a setting in on your iPhone's Bluetooth setting to allow such data to be sent over Bluetooth. Someone can do the search but just correcting you that in fact you do not require 6NS to read your messages. You cannot reply via voice command but reading is fine without the option.

I don't connect over that useless cradle that takes up storage space. You can however connect over bluetooth or if you have an iPhone 5 or later you can connect using the cable into the USB port in the center console. I'm not sure if Androids will conned into the system but my 5c does.

Since I got my car a few days ago I've been using the BMW app to stream internet radio and Pandora. when my 1-year complimentary subscription to XM runs out, I'm currently not seeing a need to renew it. Pandora is better and costs about $5/month, compared to $15 for XM.

I'm not sure if people are aware but BMW have recently released a 'universal' snap in adapter. It's universal in so far as it has a micro USB plug, so should plug into just about any recent non-iPhone phone.

The BMW Part Number is 84 21 2 351 310.

I bought one for my F15, works great with an HTC One M8 running KitKat though some of the connected drive apps aren't on Android as yet.

Finally BMW have moved away from either old proprietary or iPhone centric snap in cradles.

I've got an iPhone5 and 6NS. How do you get it to read SMS/Email messages? None of the "Office" functions work for me apart from "Contacts". I've got "Show Notifications" and "Sync Contacts" turned on in the Bluetooth settings for the car.

I don't use an iPhone myself but some colleagues do in their BMW's and my understanding is that there are limitations on how much access to the iPhone email & sms data BMW has due to changes made to the underlying API by Apple. I don't think emails are accessible though contacts and SMS's are.

Add your phone via bluetooth, make sure your messages on your connected drive are showing ALL and not Service messages only and also make sure your bluetooth on your phone has the settings mine has....

Thanks - Think the only thing I haven't checked is the filter. I'll give it a go.

I am a iPhone 4s user and for me the X5 only shows text messages that I receive while in the car with an established bluetooth connection. The messages displayed via "Office" also get wiped from the car when the car is turned off. Is there any documentation that explains how messages are supposed to work in the US?

I am also unable to get contact photos to show when receiving phone calls. Help is much appreciated.

The functionality you are looking for in addition to the 'reply' functionality happens when you have the 6NS option and your phone is directly connected to the car via the dock in the center console.

Isn't 6NS standard in the US for 2014 builds? If so, I still can't get this to work even when hard wired to the console.

I haven't bought the snap in since I plan on upgrading to the iPhone 6 or like phone come September/October. So I can't speak to the Reply function but I suppose its in the manual somewhere. Good Luck!

So if I get an Iphone 6 is there a snap in adapter coming for it in the near future?
If I get a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6 (future) will the universal snap in adapter work?

I am trying assess if the $500 option (cell phone dock etc...) is worth adding to my order or is the compatibility adapter release so painfully slow that I should pass.

Thanks

Unfortunately, there's no guarantees. I can't speak to the Samsung products, but with regards to the iPhone, BMW may choose not to produce an adapter. I bought my last X5 at the end of Sept 2011, just before the iPhone 4s came out. At that time, the only adapter they had was for the 3G/3GS. They did come out with one that worked for the 4/4s in mid-2012, towards the end of Q2, I think.

When the 5 came out, they never produced an adapter that worked in my cradle. They did eventually come out with one that works for the 5/5s in the current X5, but it is at BMW's discretion as to when they produce it or even if. My guess is they will create an adapter for the upcoming iPhone 6, but it will likely be about 6 months before it is available. Assuming Apple doesn't do some kind of generational change between the 6 and "6s", then that adapter may still work for next year's model, also. Again, no guarantees.

Thanks for your thoughts David. So if I plan to get an Iphone 6 and if they do end up making an adapter for it, it may be worth the cost (?). The reception in VT and NH is marginal, so I figure if the link to the roof antenna gets a signal it may be worth it, but signal strength gain is also speculative.

Honestly, signal gain would probably be the only reason I would attempt the package and adapter. Connection to the external antenna would be worth the attempt if you're in an area w/ marginal signal. I couldn't say just how much it would gain you, but if you can afford the cost and don't mind giving up 1/2 the center console storage to the adapter mount, then give it a shot.

For those with Office function, do you get audio notification of message? I only see the envelope (visual) notification and then you have to press a series of buttons to read it out loud. Thanks
