Height

One of my concerns is the height. I know everybody drives SUVs because they love the ride height and the commanding view of the road. My concern is more the physical dimensions of the vehicle. As I am sure many of you do, I live a pretty active lifestyle which includes skiing. On my E63, I had a really nice low profile Thule Roof Box on a low profile Whispbar roof rack. This setup made for a vehicle that was lower than a standard X5. So, even with the box attached for 4 months, I could still park my car in the garage and enter any underground parking facility without worrying about not clearing the roof or the door.

For those of you who ski, do you have any issues with the aforementioned situations? Taking the box off and on is not an option as it is hard enough to put it on and take it off the station wagon. I would imagine, it will be even more difficult on the X5.

Thanks guys. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dr. C - for what it's worth I use the Whispbars on both of the wife's Mercedes GLs - a 2015 GL450 (now returned to MBFS at lease end) and a 2018 GLE350, both holding up a Thule Atlantis 1600 roof box. The X5 is at or below the Mercedes SUVs using "official" heights (69.4" for 2018 X5, 70.7" for 2018 GLE350, 72.8" for 2015 GL450), but I'm not sure what the "true" or "effective" height is above the roof bars on each.

What I found was that the box would JUST clear the garage door rubber strip at my 2nd home, but it would not fit at home #1. For public spaces / garages / etc., IMHO there's no substitute for measuring rail height above ground and adding the net for bars + mounted box. Most garages I see these days seem to be rated for 7'+ (84"+) to accommodate full size pickups, Escalade/Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon, etc., which /should/ give you enough room, if you don't hit a seam or bump at speed.

YMMV....

Looking at moving to an x5m from a car. Always have had cars (2016 550i and C55 AMG). I will probably move into a m550i but have been looking at the x5m. Can anyone chime in on how the move from a car to this was? How close is it to driving a car? I’ve test driven an m5. Ride was too rough for me. Thx

I have a 2016 X5M and a 2018 M5. Both in comfort mode, the X5M is slightly softer. I'm 6'3" and seat comfort is equal in both. Sight lines are equal. X5M is a tiny bit more maneuverable. Both handle great on the street. I'm sure the M5 would kill the X5M at the Ring, but on the street they feel very close. X5M is an all around bad mammajamma !

Thanks for the input. I parked the X5M in the garage for the first time since I bought it in May 2018. The battery was a bit low after parking outside the last couple of days in -20C weather so it went inside to charge up overnight.

The X5M barely fit into the garage. I think I had 3 inches on either side of the exterior side mirrors and there's definitely no room up top for the box or even the roof bars.

As for downtown parking garages, when and if I put on the box, I'll probably just take my wife's car downtown.
