Good stuff Ace. The last piece of the puzzle for me is what it. What if I hate this thing and want out in two years. Well if my target price is 37 I'm thinking 3500ish in depreciation each year for the next two. So if I had to sell In Two years when the car is five years old I think I'd get close to 30 (prob a little less). So I'd be driving to for &300-$350 a month. That's not too bad. Of course the plan is to keep her for 10+.

You and I think exactly alike. BTW, based on my estimate, your depreciation figure is too optimistic. You'll eat about $9k-$10k over the next 2 years (years 4-5 of the car). You gauge depreciation based on comparable vintage and mileage of X5's today. So today, look at 2012 E70 BMW X5 values. I have a 2012 diesel and it's worth no more than $25k + a bus ticket and a packet of gum.

Sorry, it's a lot, SUVs and especially luxury SUVs depreciate like a rock. If you want better rates, buy an M car. This is the main reason I actually regret buying my X5. But I needed a large car for my growing family and minivans depreciate just as hard.

Sweet spot on depreciation curve of BMWs generally are in years 6-7, that's when it levels out and pricing is dictated on mileage and condition.

I have to say, being an enthusiast, it's really hard to keep a car for 10+ years. The M3 I have today is 9 years old (I've owned it for 7 years), and it's feeling dated to me. I love the car to death, but I am actively hunting for its replacement today. Only reason I kept it for so long is b/c there's not a lot of better (preowned) cars out there without putting up over $60k. And that's the M3. Non-M cars ages very poorly.

Update for those that care.

Was close to three X535i purchases.

1) Dealer many States away. Exchanged a few emails. Miles were 47K (higher than I liked) so I asked about an extended warranty and was quoted $4K - Yikes! Not sure what's covered but given the price that's a no. Still waiting. Given the miles I'll be walking.

2) Dealer 250 miles away - could have been a quick car rental and drive out there. Good advertised price. I got the "we price aggressively and do not discount beyond our internet price" which may be true but we were literally a few hundred apart. I was willing to pay more because it did have a few packages I wasn't looking for but I did like. So then I asked about all fee's and the out the door price. OMFG (you know what the F is for)... almost $2K in crap charges. It's almost too unbelievable that a real BMW dealer would add this crap to their purchase prices...and they were sneaky about it. I could go on but I'm not sure people want to know.

3) Local car - local X5. Priced well but in my negotiations I could only get them down $1K. Again I heard the "Priced too aggressive to move on the price" This one has been on their lot for over 60 days and has had a few price reductions so I figured they were really ready to let it go.

So what I've learned is that dealers really do want to wait for the next client to come along to see if they can get an extra grand out of them. I get that but when I see X5's sitting for 60+ days I would think they'd want to move them (within reason).

The perfect X5 is probably not out there, since you'd have to order that one from the factory, but even finding a near-perfect one will take time. And yes, you'll be looking across the state to find one. It'll take a little bit of time each day as you look at the new ones on the market. There will be dealers that aren't willing to negotiate, and others that will. One both my E70 and the current F15, I was able to get very good pricing. But I looked for a few months.

try finding the perfect M car....It's been 1 year, and I'm still looking for my M6 GC. Even though M car options are more standardized and less extensive.

I'd be so happy with having an M that I probably wouldn't even look at the options, apart from LED headlights of course.

But Nappa Leather, ACC, LED headlights, all the active driver packages, those will make your search take a bit longer. They also won't be $37K either!

Mine came from Atlanta, so I had to get shipping arranged. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

X2 it took me 6 months to find my diesel M-sport in Mineral white with black leather LED headlights and ventilated seats. The ventilated seats were the thing most vehicles were missing, I wanted what I wanted and wasn't going to settle for anything else. When you are like that time is and price are the 2 factors you have to be willing to play with.

My brother's R8 GT has carbon ceramic brakes. He tells me that, if taken care of well, he won't have to worry about them. Is that true?

I shopped used for a while what a pain trying to find the right car/options/miles/price combo then dealing with most of these used car dealers (private party sellers rare) was a pain in the ass.. then you have that what will go wrong thought in the back of your mind. pay premium for a CPO and get some assurance...

so I got tired of messing around just bought new and got lucky and most of what I wanted was on an in-stock car. overall the purchase process blows. the dealer model blows.

yes and no. It all depends on the perspective of the owner's timeline. Basically, on a street driven car of a decent weight (up to 4200 lbs), the CCBs should last at least 100k. If you track the car, all bets are off, you can be replacing it every year depending on usage.

So if your brother plans on selling it well before 100k, then yes, in his ownership timeline, he'll never have to worry about replacing it. But if he sells the car at 50k miles, the next owner would have to replace it in 5 years.

I consulted with the F10 M5 owners who are the current largest population of BMW CCB owners. Of course, none of them are remotely close to replacing their brakes. All draw heresay from the Porsche ownership experience, as the vast majority of P-cars that have had CCBs were since 2005 997.1.

The general consensus is that the rotors are the most expensive part at about $3500 PER CORNER. There's a theory that if you replace your pad at about 50% of the rotor's life, it'll make the rotors last even longer. Not sure if I buy into that theory without reading the evidence on why.


My problem is, I'll be the owner that takes on the car at 60% of the rotor's remaining life. I'll have about 6 years of standard street use, and either I'm going to bite the bullet and replace it at 100k (unlikely b/c I'll have a 9 year old car at that point worth only about $30k), or take a huge hit selling the car with CCBs at 80k miles or so with the next owner knowing that he'll take the hit and want to share the pain with me.

Final alternative is to preserve the CCBs at some point and do an complete OEM swap for standard brakes, then put the CCBs back on before selling the car, which I'm not keen on b/c I'm incurring more cost buying/selling a 2nd set of brakes and the replacement costs of those brakes every 3 years. (about $6k spent over 6 years ownership on standard brake replacement).
