Backseat Entertainment Pro

Anyone purchase the backseat entertainment option? How is it? I ordered it with my wife's new X5 that we pick up tomorrow. If you have Apple car play option can you play iTunes moves through the monitors? How is the user interface? Just looking for general remarks about this option, love it, hate it and why? I know that it's cheaper to buy a couple iPads but I really wanted something stock built in. Thanks

Have it, it's just the iDrive on a tablet with DVD/BluRay/Etc capability. I would not get it a second time in addition rear passengers complain that it eats up space since these are not incorporated into the seats like on other vehicles.

Certainly not worth the money. Money better spent on DHP!

Well, to play devils advocate in this conversation, I’m a fan of it. We had it in our E70 and we have it in our F15. Everybody’s situation is different, but we have two young daughters, age 10 and 7. When we are in the X5, they have iPad’s, iPod’s, and we let them use our iPhones from time to time as well, but they just love watching movies from the entertainment system versus the other electronic devices.

I think they just like the comfort and convenience of just putting the headphones on, sitting back and watching movies without holding anything. Short trips and long road trips they are watching something. They always ask what car are we driving when we take road trips because my car (F10) doesn’t have rear entertainment.

I will admit BMW needs to work on the placement of the system. In our E70 it was down between the front seats to the rear of the center console; which was weird. And in the F15 it would have been nice if it was integrated into the headrest.

Again; every family situation is different. For my family, we love it. The girls are in their own world watching a movie, etc. and the wifey and I can have our uninterrupted conversations and or listen to our music.

Head's up for anyone interested... BT headphones do not work with the system unless they are BMW BT headphones.

This is good to know. I was ready to go buy a couple pairs of BT headphones. Are you certain the 2018's don't allow for BT?

2017 didn't allow it so I would guess the 2018 do not either.

My 11 y old daughter figured out how to use the backseat entertainment much faster than myself; we put some 80 movies on a Samsung 1GB T1 SSD portable drive (mp4 format) plugged in on the rear USB (the front and rear USB's don't talk to each other...) and viewing them on the rear display with headphones is very pleasant.
But, for that money you may get two iPad Pro's + car holders + dining out ten times with some real good Australian Shiraz!

Off topic... are there any (good) after market RES for the F15? I have a 6 and 9 yr old... it would come in handy for the long car rides.

Connect a wireless SSD to power (creating a server in essence) and buy two iPads with car holders and voila. Each iPad can stream whatever whenever and use any BT headset you want and for cheaper than the oem version.

Have it in our MY17 F16 and our 9 year old son loves it. Loaded movies on large capacity thumb drive and set him free. He also has the Lightning to HDMI adapter on his ipad to display/mirror his ipad to the rear screens..,
