Fluid change in Transmission,Front,Rear differential and Transfer case

Yeah, the foxwell is great in some areas and just ok in others. I love it for its portability, lack of a need to update it. I just keep it in the trunk and if I ever need it, it’s always there working anywhere in a moments notice.

I also have ISTA, etc. but that’s on a dedicated laptop and is not a “use anywhere” type tool. Plus, if you aren’t handy with software I wouldn’t even behind to recommend the install process. Which means buying it setup on a laptop is several hundred dollars at the minimum.

I also have some of the dongles and apps to go with them. I find them to be buggy and needing updates that sometimes never come.

Appreciate the torq app recommendations tho!

Hello everyone found out my X5 35d 2018 56k miles has the torque vectoring rear differential… I believe this is referred to as the “QMV” rear diff? Having trouble finding the right oil to do a fluid change. Anyone know what oil this one takes and how I can verify? Checked realoem and it says the G3 but I think that may be for the typical/common rear diff but this one is different with the “planetary gears” so want to double check.

I did my one few month ago. Get BMW oil. I believe there are two different types of oil and specific qty …. Cannot fill in and let it drip …. Need to fill with specific qty

Which oil fill are you referring to that is not done until it drips out?

When I did all the components in the thread title I used three different oil types, not two as you mentioned - Transmission (1), Transfer Case (2), Front & Rear Differentials (3).

Would you guys recommend bmw fluid for front and rear diffs or is amsoil 75w90 good enough ? I'm gonna do mine on my own and just trying to gather parts

For the transfer case I stuck with BMW fluid bc there is such a tiny amount (0.5 liter only capacity) and it’s so critical to the system.

For the trans and diffs I used whatever met the spec that’s high quality but not OE prices.

So that is the standard diff found on the F85/F86 ///M. and 3x separate oil sections and take 2 different kinds of oil. The two outer are the torque vectoring via clutch packs (SAF Carbon mod- 83120445832), and the centre is just a regular rack and pinion(83222365987). If you are confused which goes where, the diff housing has the oil type cast into it near the plugs.

Per ///M spec we use the same 83222365987 in the centre section as we do in the front diff. The p/n between ///M and non on the front diff is the same. So we need 3x 83120445832 and 2x83222365987

As mentioned above, all 3 have a specific fill amount. However, the centre section is the one that kinda gets ignored. OE spec calls for around 900ml(from memory), however most of us have drained around 1.1L-1.2L and put that back in.

For the 2x outer clutch packs, they come with a specific fill amount and each side is different. One is like 510ml, the other like 590ml and both were on point. These are the do not overfill, so if you see oil dripping out of the fill plug. You've over filled.

Outstanding thorough info… thanks VERY much! Chilled Glad I asked. Agreed, on these not going to mess around with anything but BMW OEM. I know they keep on top of a lot but not real impressed with the 3 plus indy shops I’ve called around too that they didn’t have this info on the ready. Best
