Seems a bit distracting IMO, maybe a HUD would be nice

You can take the kinect SDK and 30 lines of code later have what I just saw in this demo. (as a matter of fact, ive done this before).

I wonder how much this option runs. Maybe I should start a blackmarket bmw setup

It's $2600 for this option. I really wasn't impressed so I didn't get it.

Now those people who like to tint their windshields can do so at 100% now!

Is it even legal to be on California freeways driving with windshield visibility obstructed? Seems pretty experimental. Not sure I would like to be driving in the freeway with my family with this clown driving with a blacked out windshield.

From what I've read(brochures, etc) about other BMW models, it does display a detection warning on the HUD, but doesn't show the actual night vision on the HUD. Does seem like a "maybe useful but not essential" add-on, if I had the money to burn when I got my next bimmer I'd consider it...

The next step IS to put this sort of info on the HUD. Sensors in the car will track where the drivers eyes are and where they are pointed and then based on this, a greyscale outline of the infrared signal will be projected at the right location on the windshield. Great for the driver to see things at night. A little disorienting for anyone else in the car because the projection they see would not match the outside.

I saw a youtube video where they compared the nightvision on BMWs with other makes. This youtube video also had the windshields covered so that the drivers could see only through the nightvision displays. The BMW system was not the best because it uses a passive system (i.e. the car did not emit infrared light, it could only see what was emitted naturally by the surroundings). A passive system works best when there are large natural heat differences, such as you might find in a dry place that gets very warm during the day (notice that they did this just after sunset in So CA). Fog, snow on the ground, heavy rain, not much sunlight during the day, etc. can lower the temp contrasts that an infrared camera can see. From the youtube video, the mercedes system worked better because it used an active system (the car emitted infrared light that the night vision camera was able to detect). I am not sure though why this is better than a system that uses visible light emitted by the car (headlights) and then visible light sensors in the car (eyes). If I HAD to drive with my windshield covered, where headlights and eyes were not useful, I would prefer the active infrared system. But since my night driving will be done with a transparent windshield, the passive system is just fine.

The good thing about all these systems is that even when the conditions are not so great for seeing some objects that are not much hotter or cooler than their surroundings (curbs, lines painted on a road, traffic cones), they will always be good at seeing warm things like people, animals, and running cars. Thus the passive system used by BMW is, IMHO, worthwhile. I like gadgets, I'm going to get it.

And as the previous poster pointed out, some input from the infrared sensors is used to generate messages that do end up in the HUD. When the night vision system detects a person or an animal at night, the HUD displays a warning that shows which side of the road the object is on. This seems very useful when driving at night through moose country (I live in Alaska).

My perception: darned dangerous to use in an urban environment in its current mid-dash configuration. Probably better to use on a rural highway with wide shoulders. I agree, next generation of this tech as a HUD will be a more worthwhile investment.

Until the HUD system can display a missile lock on an Audi it remains an expensive toy.

Not sure he really had the windshield blacked out. Why did he always keep looking ahead through it while driving? Not denying it is cool technology, but I think he is giving a false impression that you can actually just drive with the screen only. I hope no one else tries that and accidently hurts someone.

The whole video was made to provoke opinions which it did. I ordered it. If it detects even one deer on our fenceless road to our Sommer cottage that I didn't see with my eyes, it is worth it. Of course you can't drive only with it. In Audi and Mercedes he could have do,e it as it is behind the steering wheel, but on the BMW its on the side and thus impossible to drive with it. However the passengers can follow it too, which isnot possible if its where the tachometer is.
