Question Door #1 or Door #2?

Currently, we (my wife's car) have a 2011 X5d and it's pretty stripped: Sport pack w/20", leather, heated fronts, rear climate pack, running rails, and spare tire. It only has 30k miles, but the interior and lack of technology is getting old (was offered $33k for a trade in). I went yesterday to drive a 35i Luxury line and it was okay (the MSport is a must for me w/20"). It drove very nice and overall felt similar (aside from the steering, sound) to my E70. I'm torn with ordering 2 polar opposite F15s:

#1: X550i w/the following--
MSport w/20"
Mocha Dakota
Fineline Pure Wood
Dynamic Handling Pack
Lighting Pack
Spare Tire
Surround View
$80975

or

#2: X535i w/the following--
MSport w/20"
Paint
Mocha Nappa (Mocha Design Pack w/Multi-contour seats)
Fineline Pure Wood
Driver Assistance Pack
Driver Assistance Plus Pack
Dynamic Handling Pack
Lighting Pack
Premium Pack
Harman-Kardon
Spare Tire
$78450

I've never driven an X5 with Adaptive Drive/Dynamic Handling Pack, so I'm not sure if I'm gambling on whether it is worth the premium. Of course everyone that has it loves it. My priority (although it would be my wife's car) in comparison to the E70 is quicker and flatter handling. Comfort is nice, but not my number #1, sport is my #1.

So here are my concerns. The V8 is notorious for carbon build up and engine issues over time. My local dealer just repaired 4 V8s last month alone. My SA and master tech recommended the 35i or diesel (I want to return to gas due to our driving styles). It appears the V8s suck in terms of resale and this would not be a lease. On either spec'd vehicle, I doubt I would see a resale value on the Dynamic Handling Pack, so this also makes me question whether it is worth the $4600. Although I am not too concerned with mpgs, I obviously know the V8 is going to be significantly worse than our current diesel. The perks of the V8....the power and exhaust sound!

The perks of the 35i....quicker and lighter than my X5d, similar mpgs, basically fully equipped (so maybe better resale?), $2500 cheaper, and perhaps better reliability.

So guys/gals, which door should I take: #1 or #2???

35i is fairly "old" setup
same engine and tranny
New 35d has updated diesel engine and 8-speed tranny
I'm pretty much trying to decide myself which door to pick
But for me it's 35d vs 50i
50i has new-to-X5 power plant, so it's a monster
In your case no doubt i'd pick Door 1

Have you driven both yet? Sounds like the 35i may be enough of a performance upgrade for you and allows you to spend more on extras compared to the 50, but I would say the typical "drive 'em both" first... Obviously the 50 is an even bigger performance upgrade, but only you and your wife can decide if the 35 is enough. And I would highly recommend driving both with the M sport if you can, to get the true feel with the sport auto transmission.

35i has the new-ish 8 speed too, and since he's looking at M sports, it would have the sport auto. Not sure of his '11 35d would've had those too, but the f15 35d is still the same tranny as the F15 35i, no? I don't think I would call the N55 an "old" engine just yet...

Well 35d and 50i is more drastic change than 35i if compare to E70 version
35d got new engine and went from 6-speed to 8-speed tranny
50i got new, more powerful engine
35i remained almost the same, maybe small update to the same tranny?

Main difference from 35i to 35i I think would be the sport auto (not sure it was even available then?). I didn't realize the '11 35d had the 6 speed but 35i had the 8.. But either way, he wants gas so 35d to 35i, tranny and engine still noticeably different.

Thanks guys for the replies.

Yeah, I forgot the MSport pack includes the sport auto, so that may feel even more responsive. As I mentioned earlier, the one I drove yesterday was a Luxury line.

Unfortunately, not many F15 with MSport (35i and certainly not 50i) are available to test drive. They are just beginning to land on dealer lots as we speak and most are already sold. I was planning on driving 1.5hrs today to test drive a 50i, but they were pre-sold. I certainly need to test drive both in order to make the most "rational" decision. Based upon the test drive, either brut force (50i) or loads of options/tech (35i) will help seal the deal. I really don't need a new X5, but this happens all the time with me! I also would prefer not to take delivery during the winter and get through one more winter with my E70.

BTW, Yesterday I also test drove Audi's SQ5 and what a blast! That was a great drive. My few complaints are the cargo area with the seats up is very tight. Almost reminded me off the same space as my previous MkV GTI. And the wheel gap/height is not the same as the euro-spec. Also, this one had the 20" wheels as oppose to the 21" and it really didn't look that much special compared to a standard Q5. Although the same platform/size, I am eagerly awaiting tomorrow's reveal of the Porsche Macan in LA!

What does your wife prefer? You state that it's going to be her vehicle and looking at the builds you have provided, one is all sport and no technology (which you state is an issue with your current one) and the other is less sport and all technology. Based on where you're driving on a daily basis and what you use the vehicle for, you may very well end up using one feature more than the other.

My wife got a loaded 35i and it is awesome. Sure, it's not as peppy as my 335, but that's not its purpose. However, it has enough power to be fun (especially in sport mode) and more importantly, to keep her out of trouble while pulling out into traffic.

What does my wife prefer....she's the type of buyer that if you put her in a Corolla she would say she likes the steering wheel and the windshield wipers Okay maybe she is not that bad, but not too far from it. She actually has mentioned a Prius on more than one occasion. So although this would be her car, I tend to have the most influence and it's just a matter of finding the right balance (okay maybe a little more tilted in my direction).

To be honest, I was initially happy with how we custom built our E70, but we are now feeling it with resale, especially if I were to try and sell it privately. My brain says go with the loaded 35i, but my emotions are leaning more to the 50i. Then again, if I'm going to spend $80k on a car, I say forgo an SUV/crossover all together and get another coupe, like an Audi RS5, but we do need some practicality.

The ZF8 is so fast, I'd be surprised if you could really tell the difference in software between setups (despite the obvious lack of paddles).

Any who... the X5 is no sports car- I would trade tech/handling for floaty power all day.

Yeah I know it's no sports car, but what are you saying? You would rather have "floaty" power rather than handling? I interpret "floaty" power to mean like a "Buick" ride?

Didn't you just get an new F15? Which one and how was it spec'd?

That's a lot of money to not get something exactly like you want it.

But neither will be floaty
Both options in OP are equipped with DHP
So it really comes down to power vs. features
Suspension options are configured the same

50i with nearly 150 extra HP and almost 200 TQ will be thrill

No doubt about it, go with 50i. $80,000 for the 35 is too high in my book. You can still add a few more options to 50i and it wouldn't change payment that much! You don't want to regret it, although im sure you will enjoy the car either way!

I have a similar quandry. I've owned a 35i X6 which was a lot of fun, a 50i X6 which was just smooth power, and an X5M which I actually found the least enjoyable of the three (here in WA I could never enjoy the engine, and found it too "lurchy" in most conditions).

When the X5M was repurchased I decided to be more "practical" with a RR Evoque. The Evoque is only a 2.0T but is remarkably fun to drive. However, it's small, plasticky, and niggly issues have be coming back "home".

I've just ordered a loaded 35i (76K) and keep going back and forth on getting another V8. However, the bulk of my driving is in stop/go traffic, or on roads littered with cops - so even though there isn't much payment difference I'm sticking with the 35i for the better gas mileage and lower ownership costs.

Then again, maybe that's the wrong decision?....

Honestly the 35i sounds great, has plenty power, and is more than fun to drive.
Then again, the 50i sounds just incredible. When I first heard the CA start the demonstrator on that bad boy I knew I was sold.....

To each their own of course - for me, dropping upwards of $80k for the 35i seems a bit odd - not that there is anything wrong with the 6 - it just seems to me if your gonna spend that amount of cash - get the 8 or keep the 6 price no more than $70k..

My .02 cents

Oomph, go for 1.

Niceties pick 2.

Concerned and troubled with the so called carbon build up associated with the 50i pick 2. Mileage to you is minor. As you said if is your wife's to drive so let her decide, as if you decide wrongly, you maybe constantly reminded that you were the one who decided .To me I would defer the responsibility.

Follow up. If I understand correctly, you are considering the trade because your current is lacking technology then go for the 35i with more tech vs the 50i. You also refer to the interior of the E70, so both versions of the E15 will give you the same new look, hence this is a non-factor.

That's a lot of money for a 35i, but I personally enjoy "toys" more than a larger engine. After all, the X5 will never be a sports car. So if I had to choose between the two packages, I'd get the 35i will all the options vs. the 50i with less toys.
