No more Michelin PSSs for X5/X6 M?
Has anyone heard that Michelin has decided to stop making the Pilot Super Sports (in 21") for our cars?
Here's how I heard this from my SA: I have a slow leak in a front tire and take it in to the dealer to inspect. Sure enough, there is a nail embedded in the tire. I'm thinking that they will have to replace the tire (I have BMW's wheel and tire coverage). Instead, my SA comes back, asking I want "four Dunlop replacement tires or Bridgestones." What gives? He tells me several things: 1) he cannot find a single PSS in any warehouse in the country; 2) he has called BMW and they will apparently not use them for our cars; and 3) he calls Michelin, confirms that Michelin will not make the tire any longer and Michelin is prepared to pay for three tires of any brand to replace the three other tires I will need to replace. Long story short -- for $50, I'm getting four new tires (N.B., I discussed and my dealer is replacing them with the Pirellis in 21") Just wondering if anyone else has come across this. I did some independent research and no one has any in stock (Tire Rack, etc.). I had only 10k miles on my PSSs -- has anyone else had to replace and come across this issue? I'm just wondering because the Pirellis are a run-flat tire and I've not heard anything favorable about the Dunlops. I am a fan of the Michelins. |

They show available 8/26-Fronts and 9/30-Rears on Tire Rack. I know GMP in Charlotte said the tire is normally hard to get because one of the Porsche vehicles used the same exact size as the X5M 21" OEM setup
This would suck if it is true. I specifically wanted 21" wheels for my car so I could run the Michelin PSS tire. |

But my SA stated that BMW will be putting a new tire on the 2017s and moving away from the Michelins. So, are we to assume that the inventory availability is inaccurate? |

The dunlop and Pirelli in those sizes are run flats. Maybe they were confused? I hope they are wrong. I love the performance of this tire.

I ordered my X5M in mid June and received it by the end of June. X has 21s with MPSS. So if this is all true it must have happened within a month. I find this hard to believe Michelin wouldn't be staying with the M cars. They make a tire for all of them, not only the Xs.

And, if they are replacing them, for the love of god, don't let it be with Dunlops. They're awful. |

No, it is luck of the draw on some. My '14 M5 has PZeros on it.

I don't think the Pirelli P-Zero are run-flat.
I was on the Highway two weeks ago and I rode on a screw. I heard immediately a strange noise and the tire pressure indicator is immediately turned red. Hopfully it was near my house so I could arrive safe at home (less than 5km- 3miles). Arrived in my garage, all the air escapes the tire and in 30 seconds it was completely flat. As I live in Switzerland, we don't have the tire and wheel insurance so it cost me 625CHF (650USD) to replace the rear tire. My tire dealer could not find any Pirelli P-Zero in 325/35R20 108Y in Switzerland so he has to order one in France. So it seems that it is very difficult to find tires for our cars regardless of size and brand. |

I do too. In fact, if one tire were not compromised, I would just LOVE to extract the last bit of performance from these tires before they are replaced tomorrow. |

I suspect the OPs SA is being told he can't get a PSS before September and Michelin is stepping up to cover the replacement given their supply issue. I'd be shocked if they bailed on the size. |

I really hope you are right. I like the Michelins. I will make that point to my SA tomorrow when they switch me to the Pirellis. If (and hopefully when) the Michelins are in supply again, I will go back in to my SA and ask that they switch me back to the Michelins. Clearly I would NOT have switched but for reliance that they were discontinued. The runflat Pirelli is not comparable to a Michelin tire specifically designed for our cars. |

I've already started looking at a 22" wheel to find a non RFT. The OEM 21 with PSS hits such a sweet spot in terms of aesthetics and performance. |

The new Pirelli P Zero is anyway the best tire on the market at the moment, so that's the way to go...
