X6M Thoughts?

Hi - I searched the forum and couldn't find a lot of information about the X6M, so wanted to poll the group to get thoughts. A dealership in my area has one on the lot (2015) and I'm considering going to take a look at it.

Any thoughts from owners? Any major issues or headaches?

Thanks,

Eric

I'm on my 2nd. I prefer the previous generation but still very happy with my 2016. Go take it for a spin.

My only gripe is the break squeal. Others are experiencing wheel bearing issues. There are threads on both issues.

Good luck.

I was very happy with mine until last week, got 5k miles and front driveshaft gone, engine is stock and suspension too, so not happy with that...
Also the brake squeaks and driver's seat too, especially when it's hot outside.

We changed our order from X6M to X5M overnight. Could not live with ourselves knowing our heads touched the ceiling when sitting in the back seat. Just didn't have the comfort and utility we were after. And there's something about paying $100k for a car and having your passengers hit their head on the ceiling that turned me off...

Great car! I love it, my wife loves it and my kids love it.

I love it because it's fast. My wife loves it because it's more rare on the road than a X5 and the sportier look. My kids love it because they have tv in the back .

I guess I don't run into the head touching ceiling issue because i have two car seats in there but I did do some research and when i sat in the X5M and the X6M there wasn't that much of a difference. I found out watching some review videos that the X5 seats are flat while the X6 seats dip in more to compensate for the sloped roof. I did however feel like getting into the X6 was a bit more challenging but once in it felt pretty good and I'm 6'2".

As for the brake squeal... I admit it does get a little annoying but I don't notice it much on then X6M. I have an M5 and my brakes squeal lot more.

Hope this helps... Definitely no regrets!!

I have a X5M and my sister drives the same configuration in a X6M. Basically lower rear and large blind spot in back. Drives identical to the 5. Supposedly lower center of gravity but no way to find out in regular driving. Its really all preference. The back is cramped for adults, but the biggest issue is rear visibility. Drive them before you buy.

Ah yes, that was the other thing. Rear window sucks, and has no wiper. No bueno in the rainy PNW.

if you are driving fast enough, the lack of x6m rear wiper isn't an issue!

seriously, love my x6m. coming from an infiniti FX50S this car makes me much happier.

I thought the OP was looking at one particular car - the 2015 X6 M on his dealer's lot.

I didn't view this as a referendum on which model he should get.

I second the view that he should go and drive the car. How best to know if the car is right for you unless you drive.

For all the complaints on the board about certain issues (e.g., brake squeal, wheel bearings), I am very happy with my choice (X5 M). I get excited to get in the car and often find reasons to take a longer route home. I can't think of another vehicle that would make me feel that way.

The cars are a rare combination of power, speed, practicality (with the X5 M) and pure luxury. If you don't believe me, sit in a run of the mill Mercedes or BMW. Better yet, go on a business trip and fill in the blank on the car they give you. You'll be aching to get back in the X5/X6 M.

Good luck. Hopefully you can get a real deal on the 2015. Knowing what I know now, I would still buy the car, even with the little gremlins.

Rear visibility is much better than the E71. It took a while to get used to initially going from X5 to X6. Again, take it for s spin.

Thanks for all of the great information. I am planning to go and see the car on Friday, and wanted to understand any major issues with the car. I've had my eye on it for quite some time, but didn't want to jump in only to find out there are issues with the car.

I'll keep these points in mind when I go see he car on Friday. Thanks so much for the help!

i really like my 2016 X6M. i see too many non-m x5's on the road so i decided to go for the x6. looks unique. people talk about the blind spot but once you own the truck you wont have any issues. mine is also an individual color #pyritebrown

When I first got my X6M and looked at my rear view mirror, I went 'omg I can't see anything!' But then I quickly adapt to it and now I don't think it's a problem at all. It's unique and rare, have it for a year and still love to jump in it every morning, and still see people taking pictures driving on the road.

Heck, I did a fast launch on the street, didn't realize there was a cop right next to me, and guess what, he gave me a thumb up instead of ticket lmao

My current X6M is my fifth X6 (the others were prior generation 50is and 35is though). I had an E-series X5M also.

I like the car a lot, but I wouldn't lease/buy another new X5M/X6M. The "regular" X5 or X6 is the way I'd go in future, if I do another BMW SAV.

- It's fast, but the transmission hunts around a little unless you leave it in "race", then it's jerky
- Handling is decent, but it's still an SUV.
- Sounds incredible, but the regular V8 sounds pretty decent too
- Seats are really uncomfortable. I have the same "race" style seats in my 911, and the headrest padding is rock-like by comparison in the X6M. The "comfort" seats on my old X6 were awesome by comparison
- Brakes squeak
- Wheels "click" under steering (fixed twice)
- Steering on the X6M doesn't adjust down far enough
- My vehicle is in for its steering column to be replaced. Again.

I traded in my M4 for the X6M cause I needed more room and wanted a more comfy ride (the M4 was awesome but too intense and beat me up on long rides). I flipping LOVE this car. it's fast AF and unique enough that I rarely see another even in LA. I've gotten multiple compliments too. Only complaints: absolutely abysmal gas mileage but I guess that comes with the big V8/5200lb weight territory...back seat is a bit tight and rear storage space isn't great but still better than my M4...the exhaust note is a bit quiet (soon to be rectified with an aftermarket muffler). No other tech problems or issues at all. The rear window really isn't a problem with the excellent rear-view cam and parking sensors. Not sure if I'd go for the Bang & Olufsen stereo again on my next BMW. Otherwise it's awesome.

So I had the test drive...

I went and saw the vehicle and took a test drive. I absolutely loved it - sounded amazing, rode well, and stupid fast. I mean, I live in Columbus OH, and you don't really see people driving fast (which was not the case when we lived in Atlanta - people there drive fast as hell). The speed was nuts, and I barely even did anything. I hit 90MPH easing onto the highway. Crazy.

The only thing that was underwhelming was the B&O stereo. The salesperson was trying to convince me it sounded awesome, but it was very blah.

I won't be getting the vehicle though for a few reasons. First, if I got the car I would likely lease so as to avoid the maintenance long-term, and they wouldn't allow a lease (even though they said they would before I arrived - I kinda figured it since it was a 2015 but you'd think the salesperson would have sound information). Second, this would be more of a toy for the wife and I and we already have SUVs, so may instead put the money into a fun car (thinking M4 Vert potentially). Lastly, some of the feedback in this thread definitely gave some pause. Sounds like there are some squeaky brake issues, clicking, seat discomfort, etc. For that amount of coin, I would not expect to be hearing about these issues.

It was like the perfect car though. Perfect. Like, perfect. But, it will be perfect in another person's driveway! :-)

Driving around town in "manual" mode is pointless, I find first gear jerky as hell.

Seats are quite comfy to me, however. And I have the brake squeak but no clicking (yet?)

I think I would probably save the cash and get the fastest normal (or diesel) X5 next time, for all the use I get out of the extra horsepower...but I love the interior on the M, so it would be hard to step down.

ive generally loved my experience with the latest x5m . no complaints in particular , i wish bmw had a broader range of colors for interior and exterior.

ive traded my current 2015 model and am waiting for my 17 to be ready , hoping by end of next week or early week after . this time round ive gone for the amaro brown individual interior , long beach blue exterior . im kinda looking forward to using the new idrive with car play , something new to learn ;-).

Please post some pics, I'm interested in Aragon Brown but in decision between LBB and MW.

That's one of the reasons I like to drive in manual mode, I can quickly upshift instead of staying in a low gear. I find the non-M mode to be a little lethargic, and if I max everything out in M mode it can be a little jerky. Still acceptable, but in stop and go traffic it's sometimes better to upshift manually so it doesn't hang around in a low gear too long.
