Brake Pedal Travel

Car is in for service and told the dealer the brake pedal fees soft and travel down too far to the floor. Sometimes the pedal linkage itself feels odd when braking.
Seemed to occur after a brake fluid flush 18:months ago.
They agree.
They flushed the system and no better.
Can’t figure out why.
Will be looking at master cylinder.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Sounds like air is trapped somewhere in the system.

My new to me 2015 X5 also has unusually long travel before it takes, but when it does the brakes feel good and stopping power seems to be fine.

The service history shows that it did have brake fluid changes/flushes and I plan on doing a fluid replacement this weekend and will cycle the ABS using my Foxwell 530.

Hoping for an improvement as reported in this thread.

Yesterday I flushed the brake fluid and cycled the ABS with Foxwell and the brake pedal travel has improved to the point where I consider it normal.

Both our E70 & F15 call for DOT4-LV type fluid. This is a low viscosity fluid & far less common than what's put in other cars.

I replaced the master cylinder because I could force the pedal to the floor after flushing brakes. A new master cylinder made no difference.

Two months later, I flushed with DOT4-LV and blocked the brake pedal down with a block of wood between the pedal & seat. It's been good for three years, now.

Can you explain this process? You force the brake pedal down the entire time you flush and fill....then let off the block of wood at the very end? I have a pressure bleeder and normally don't touch the brake pedal during the process.

No.

Do your normal flushing procedure and button everything up.

Overnight, wedge a stick between the seat and brake pedal. Power the seat forward to put decent pressure on the brake pedal. Let it sit overnight.

This suggestion originally came from another. I can only say it helped me. My X5 brakes feel great.
