N63tu oil consumption
I know...there's been threads before. I've read most of them and went "won't happen to me". Went on first trip on the weekend, 50i is 5500Km old. Half an hour into trip I get "you need 2 liters of oil" on screen. Stop and put in 1 liter, measure oil..."you need 2 liters". Next day put in 1 more...."you need 2 liters". Put in 1 more - 3 in total now! Measure again....half way up the measure mark. Previous threads have posted BMW considers 1 quart in 750 miles acceptable in the "up to 6000 miles" break-in period. So far I have done about 1 quart per 1500 miles. These can't have a run-in oil, as we get to go to 20000km before first service. I will do mine at 10000. The car was kept under 4000rpm for run-in, and then it has been taught a lesson every time I drive it. Does the consumption get better?

can you explain how higher revs and higher oil temps create less consumption?
the old theory was if you flog the motor during the break-in period the piston rings expand and seal better a la the motorcycle break-in method but i don't see how driving a vehicle hard consumes less oil than moderate civilized driving. i am on 8k and have not topped off yet between oil changes. the oil level does go down slightly but not to the point of triggering a warning. i carry a spare litre of oil 0w30 (spec for the motor) in a bmw oil bag just in case but as of yet have not needed.

My 5.0 has 32,000 miles on it and I have never had to put oil in it, or had the screen say to add oil. Personally, I hate this when I can't manually check the oil and have to rely on something electronic.

i agree... i prefer a manual analog dipstick. audi switched over to these devices back when the b8 debuted and i hated it then and i hate it now. i've said this before on here and i'll say it again, the newer and more tech laden the vehicles get the less i want them. i find myself interested in older vehicles these days over the latest and greatest.

Hi, on a recent weekend trip my 2016 X5 50i went from all is fine to warning oil low to oil below low refill now with two quarts, at just 4300 miles!
I do daily city commuting, with a lot of stop start in traffic, and occasional long drive weekend trips. Seems to me the oil consumption is erratic vehicle to vehicle, or depends on driving style or conditions? |

When I got it [new] to about 22,000 miles, I had no consumption or very minimum consumption that the meter didn't really go down (if it did it was just 1/4 on the iDrive). I was redlining from day one and did a break-in change at 1250 miles (which according to the Blackstone report was full of metals, so good thing I changed it). Then changed every 5000 or so after that (alternating between doing it myself and the included maintenance—every report was clean).
Then from 22,000-27,000 miles I had to add 5 L which came down to 1 L per 1000 miles which got me quite worried. I had just moved from CA to NY and I thought maybe it was the stop-and-go traffic or different climate. Basically I had no explanation for the sudden increase. I love flogging this thing every chance I get and if you see an X5 flying by at 120* mph on the Northern Parkway please don't be alarmed or chastise me, thanks. I actually drive pretty mellow most of the time especially in town or residential areas, just like to drive a little fast once in a while (okay off topic). Anyways from 27,000-32,000 miles I did not need to add anymore oil, but the meter did go down to 1/2 to I assume that's 1 L, but still the sudden decrease is confusing. That's my last change, I hope all is back to normal as my next service is due in 4000 miles at 38,000 miles. *120 used to indicate faster than traffic flow—may not be actual speed.

Only down 1/3 or less for 5k on my 14 50i which seems acceptable to me. My Porche Cayenne turbos used more oil than this does.

Depends where it is from
The US produced Mobil 1 is no longer BMW LL01 approved The French made one we get here is still BMW LL01 approved Read on the bottle, It tells you on the back if its BMW LL01 approved Dont know if the French one will be changing its formulation like the US one.

One of my greatest concerns with my recent, 12/16, purchase of a 15 50i w/ 17,700 miles, was the well documented history of oil addiction by many 4.4L twin turbo motors. With yearly 6500 miles oil changes by PO and now over 7000 miles since last change, I can report an oil level of slightly over 1/4 when checked on level ground, which is the same level at purchase.
I'm leaving for a 3000 mile road trip next week from NY to Fl. Will report back if steady 70-85 mph cruise induces consumption. As for driving style, I usually keep up with the fastest groups on interstates and try to give the turbos a good spin on entrance ramps. |

https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1 Specifications and approvals Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 synthetic motor oil meets or exceeds the requirements of: API SN, SM, SL, SJ ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 has the following builder approvals: MB-Approval 229.3 MB-Approval 229.5 VW 502 00/505 00 PORSCHE A40 According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is of the following quality: API CF VW 503 01 Personally if it works on Porsche and Mercedes, I don't believe there is any problem with BMW regardless of approval. That said the dealer sells me the BMW 5W-30 for $6-ish per L, so there is no reason for me to get the Mobil 1.
