BMW's have seven year gestation period and a seven year lifespan.

The LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) is usually at four year mark.

So testing the next chassis is about right on schedule for it to pop up and finally be seen in mule form.

I was confused about the boxy statement as well. How is this boxy? A G wagon is boxy, not an X5. It's a good balance of masculinity lines.

If he wanted a girly shaped car, get a Cayenne.
Wow that X5 is a beast!

I see them every day as I live about a mile from the dealer. They are incredibly boxy. Very unattractive vehicle in my opinion. The E70 is the best looking X5 thus far.

Negative. We usually see next-gen mules on public roads around the same time as the current-model LCI. Heck, we only saw the G20 for the first time a few weeks ago! And it's almost 2 years older than the F15. In other words, this is about a year earlier than we we're expecting to see a replacement for the F15.

Exactly. Only thing I've seen is a 7 series with weights on the roof.
With that said, I am scared of the price, an x5 50i is an least $73k which means the x7 will be at least $85k.

Edit: just went and looked at my f15 X5, definitely looks like more metal behind the passenger door window (C pillar?) not enough for a true 3rd seat though imo.

I suspect that they're testing new tech for it. Only reason I can think of to get testing SO early. Flush out the bugs before the hardcore testing really begins, when they can focus on fixing other problems unrelated to the new tech/software.

This would be surprising. I'm thinking this is the X3. Or at least I hope. B/c it looks smaller than the current X5.

If you think the X5 is boxy and don't like the looks go buy an X6 then.

Strange F15/16 only out for couple years, and LCI haven't announced yet. I think this might be something else, X3 or X7 in disguise

The character line is totally re-invented. It is more three dimensional and joins elements that provide areas such as the rear taillights to melt inwards to the body leaving imprints in the metal around the lights, the same goes for the front lights also.

The new car will be offered with Laser-Light and OLED Lighting
More importantly X5 comes with a Carbon Core therefore sheds extra weight over the current modified E/F car.
Its more sportier definition is in place to accommodate the all new BMW X7.
Love the design kinks and charater lines. I am not so sure about the rear light cluster and flanks. Looks a bit clumsy for me. It is an icon car for BMW and has to be done right.

Look more like a mule to me, the front wheels do seem centred in the middle on some pics.

A shortened cycle isn't so surprising given that the F15 was more of a "E70 Super LCI" rather than a new model. The original post-E70 X5 was to be based on the F10 5 Series, but proved to be too heavy. That the F15 is still competitive is a testament to the greatness of the E70 platform, but it's also demonstrates that the F01/F10 platform was too bloated. BMW would be in a bad place if they'd used that platform given that most others are getting lighter. Hopefully the lightweight tech that they invested in for the i models will pay off as it is used more and more for the various G series.

On a related note, the new Q7 is impressive, with a killer interior. Shame about the outside, which manages to look less sexy than many minivans. It will be interesting to see what they can do with this platform in the Cayenne, which is quite long in the tooth.

I'm not sure how you can say that. The F15 shares virtually all technology with the F10, but styling cues from even newer designs (i.e. dash, headlights). There's really not much left over from the E70 platform.
