F85/86 Vs Ford F150 Raptor?
I know this isnt a direct comparison, but in 2 months I need to get a second car. I have an F82 for myself and F80 in the household to use if needed, but the household may need a utility vehicle. I want to retain as much performance as possible, The problem with the Raptor is the 10k markup which I would never pay for any vehicle, but assuming it can be had at MSRP, what do you guys think?
I know this is a BMW forum, but most of you guys are objective when giving advice. Wont really be towing much, but the main purpose is cargo space for hauling medium to large things around. Probably also a bit of offroading. Pros and cons for both? EDIT: Ive also considered saying fuck it and getting a porsche 911 instead. or trading my car in for a 911 or an M4 CS. Im lost as shit. I hope you guys can provide some pragmatic insight.

First world problems lol .... An X5M and a Raptor are two completely antithetical vehicles .... not even in the same universe :-)
The Raptor is a huge balls out off-road monster and the M is a daily driver that transformes into a track car if you want it to. The BMW is also $20k more on average. My F150 Limited was spacious (like a land yacht), fairly luxurious for a pickup and a nice ride with the Boss 6.2L V8 - I haven't driven Ford's new turbo V6 (whatever they call it these days) but from what I can tell it's fast as hell with tons of torque (exceeding the 389). I wouldn't even know where to begin comparing it to my F85 though - the BMW is orders of magnitude more refined and obviously faster. Not sure that helps or not ... i sold my raptor gen 1 to get my x5m. the raptor was a beast. pure power pure fun and never worried about rain sleet or snow. the x5m is like a crotch rocket. super nimble and tons of fun to drive. but sophisticated when you drive normal. the raptor is always a pickup truck. the old saying you can put lipstick on a pig but its still a pig. with that said i missed my raptor this winter while sleeping beauty rested quietly in the garage due to summer tires and 500+hp no bueno. the new raptor is a supposedly a new animal that has been refined with the turbo'd v6 and a 10 speed transmission. both are fun just have to decide where you play more. i took my raptor offloading a few times but in the end it got really old as my daily driver!

Basically comes down to the "hauling and Off-roading ". If you are hauling refrigerators get the Raptor. If you are truly off-roading in deep mud, ruts, hill climbing, get the Raptor. If not, the M will kill it for a daily driver in handling, acceleration, parking, etc etc.

Vince summed it up great...I have a new raptor also and love it, but it's always a big truck...the x5m is so much more nimble...but obviously different purposes. As for the raptor mark ups, if you are patient you will find for sticker...they will also be increasing production soon, so there will be plenty of trucks

I just built a '17 Raptor on Ford's website - maxed out SuperCrew is $63,900 - which isn't bad. I would never pay over sticker though so I agree with the OP on that point.
It a really nice looking piece of kit - but probably not something to use as a daily driver I wouldn't think anyways. |

Thank you all for being objective. I wish the M3/M4 guys were like this lol. I'd love to know though what are out of the ordinary maintenance tasks or common issues, if any? On the X5M.

I voted Raptor. I had an F250 before my X5 and definitely miss the truck. Of course a Raptor isn't as big as a 250, but still - it was awesome driving a truck (a real truck - I laugh when people call the X5 a truck).
I'll also add that the new F150 cab that's used in the Raptor is really nice for a Ford. Quality wise it's certainly no BMW, but it's still really nice and very roomy. I hate the infotainment system but oh well. |

I love my X5M but I have to admit that I would like to figure out how to have a Raptor as well. It is such a beast....

I would never own a Raptor over an X5M, but I would own both if I had a 3rd parking spot. Considering you have (will have had) an F80 and F82, maybe go Raptor for something different. If snow isn't a concern, I'd say look at the 991.2 GTS, Im biased of course.

Hahahahahahaha, that's funny. I'm a big Ford fan for their trucks but there is no comparison between an $80k Ford and any German luxury vehicle in the same price range.

So, I own (nearly) all of what you're looking at. Currently my stable is an X5m, an M4 competition, and I have an F150 Lariat with a whipple supercharger on it for my "hauling" needs.
I almost bought the Raptor when I bought the F150 but opted out on it. I'm also glad I did. The Raptor is nice. But it's also a little floaty and very wide. And honestly I like the looks of my blacked out F150 with it's relatively slim lines (6" narrower). With the aftermarket coilovers and supercharger, it's an animal. And will destroy a raptor in a straight line. Sure, the raptor might hit jumps that I can't, but really I don't do that and never would. I use the truck to haul my cars and bikes and take me up the mountain to ski. That said, I love my X5M. Way more than any other car I've ever owned - and I've had a lot (over 40). It's just ridiculously versatile and very fast. It also cruises like a luxury car should. If I had to have only one, it'd be the X by a very wide margin. I would get tired of driving the Raptor. I never get tired of driving the X. Some pics attached. Note the pics of the truck are before the lift, which really only levels the front out with the rear. |
