Car Insurance in UK

So now my car is on its way I thought I would start researching the insurance costs.
So far cheapest I have found is £1200pa
I was expecting around £800pa.
So could I ask any one of you in the UK what quotes you have received and who with?
Appreciate your help

Yep, we're shafted living as we do within the M25, trying to insure one of the most nicked cars in the UK.......

I used Gocompare and Confused-dot-whatzit sites last week, and got quotes ranging from £849 to over £2500!! That was with a Tracker fitted as well!!!

Like you I was hoping for £750-800, but that seems somewhat optimistic I'm afraid given our location.

Best answered with a picture

I absolutely refuse to have a telematics box installed, not because I have anything to hide, or I drive like a hooligan, but just the idea of some company monitoring my every move just feels wrong to me....

The car represents freedom, the go anywhere feeling, not have Big Brother watching me the whole time.

I ended up extending my current insurance till it's expiry and paying an extra £240 on top, then will go Insurance hunting again when coming up for renewal in July.

Almost identical picture for me - best price for the year on my 50d was £972 with a couple of additional drivers and zero no claims (company car driver).

I've transferred a policy I had on a temporary car with Tesco for £400 and will earn a year NCB.

Hoping to go for a multicar policy in the summer.

not sure how property and casualty insurance pricing works in the UK, but here in the US, these types of questions are fruitless Q&As as numbers are thrown around based on different risk characteristics of the insured person.

In the US, insurance pricing differs from person to person due to so many variables such as:

-Zip code (geographic location)
-personal credit score
-past claims
-annual mileage
-bundle discounts with other insurance products purchased (home, boat, RV, motorcycle, life, umbrella)
-make, model, year of car
-level of insurance coverage purchased (each US state have different minimums, some people over-insure)
-how long you've been a customer
-other promotional discounts

For example, b/c I purchased an umbrella policy, I actually reduced my auto insurance down to the state minimum as my umbrella is much cheaper to purchase to provide the additional coverage than auto insurance's additional coverage. On top of this, I also have homeowners insurance through them as well, and 2 cars to insure, so that adds some discounts to what I actually pay.

so really, the best way to compare is to ask someone in your same city how much his auto coverage is if he has the exact same coverage variables as above as you...which is highly unlikely for most established adults with families and hard assets these days.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one struggling with insurance. I have spent numerous hours over the last week to find a reasonable quote. The best price I have for an insurance I'm happy with is £1500 with direct line. Most of my quotes have been 2k plus and requiring a tracking device. Direct Line don't need a tracker so that's a bonus. I tried the comparison sites but the cheapest through them was about £2k

I have 6 points on my licence from an MS90 which although expired shows up on my licence for a few more months until its cleared off completely in July. The MS90 is "Failure to give information as to identity of driver etc" that i received due to not replying to NIP for a sp30. I didn't receive the NIP because I moved and didn't update my V5 with the new address until a few weeks later so missed all the correspondence

Hopefully next year i can resume to reasonable insurance costs

What has everyone done for GAP insurance?

WTF you have to let them track your driving to get insurance with some companies?

In the UK its a new thing they have introduced recently, you don't "have" to get that insurance, the same companies offer the same cover without a telematics box, but the policies with the boxes are on average £200 cheaper

My auto insurance carrier wouldn't even allow me to purchase a personal umbrella policy unless I have 300/300/100 auto policy coverage. You must know a good insurance agent (unless you are one) to help you find that Umbrella policy.

Is a £100 per month really that much for an X6M? Doesn't seem unreasonable.

That's usually how it works, you have to have a minimum of 100k or 250k before the umbrella kicks in (depends on company). If he has state minimum (15k or 25k depending on state) he probably doesn't have coverage at all for the amount before his umbrella kicks in. It would suck to find that out the hard way.

Another UK purchaser awaiting a mid-March X5 M50d - there are a big band of us congregating on here!

I'm fortunate, if that's the right word, to be old enough with sufficient NCB to have got a very reasonable quote through Money Supermarket of £464.00.

Being outside of the M25 and with a limit of 8,000 miles helps but as an earlier poster commented, there are so many variables it is very difficult to compare. I have heard that Adrian Flux arranges good cover on more exotic cars so perhaps worth a try.

What has everyone done for GAP insurance?
Thanks for the heads up on the GAP insurance.
Also looking at purchasing so will update everyone if I see any good deals. What level of cover do you recommend?
In addition I'm looking at Tyre and Alloy insurance, so any recommendations?
Cheers

Wow that is a good price
Hastings Direct quoted me £850ish about 6 weeks ago - cheapest I have found but may not be available now? I will check and confirm.

Probably is, I've just got my best quote of £850 via Confused.dot down to a best of £760 with Hastings via GoCompare.

Will be going with that most likely.

Was that based on £25k or £50k cover?
