AMG handbuilt engines always marvelled me.
You can't make such broad comparisons. Is the engine in the c/e/r/slk350 better than the 335i, 535i, x35 engine? in terms of performance no, reliability hell yeah, efficiency, probably not.

comparing merc's 3.0 liter v6 to bmw's 3.0 liter inline, i'd take the inline

in the end, it's all about brand loyalty, and you're wasting your time arguing with people who are not going to drop their own opinions for yours.

The reality is that both manufacturers produce excellent engines, but their success per a specific segment's standards varies. BMW makes brilliant engines with superb smoothness, cleanliness, and performance characteristics. That doesn't mean that Mercedes lacks by comparison, it just depends on what we're comparing, and who's doing the driving, as it all comes down to preference at this point.

I think it's hard to match the sensational S85 V10 that BMW developed, but at the same time, Mercedes creates some god-like AMG engines, the M156/159 6.2L being one of my very favorite from an aural and performance standpoint. Mercedes(/AMG) still has the most powerful engines between the two companies, but I think BMW(M) produces more distinct, memorable motors.

Wrong. A $1500 tune will net you more than 100bhp for a C63. So many generalizations on this board.

Engine parts, nah. Regarding everything else, for sure.

Amount of 'quality' tunes/bolt-ons is actually very close.

I would say best engine from BMW is ///M 5.0L V10. Best engine from Mercedes is 6.2L AMG V8. Tough choice.

I can only speak of diesels...having owned a 3 Series and an E Class (the E Class for a month). In short,my MB diesel is more "refined" than the BMW's (though that wasn't at all "unrefined") and the BMW's had more punch.

I think it is subjective. Up to debate because each engine has unique/distinct qualities that will appeal to different people. There is no definitive better engine maker.

Both are excellence but both are very different in their approach to performance. I honestly don't think you could pick one over the other.

Different clientele, different engine philosophies.

You're just going to hear broad generalizations...

I agree. Both companies make great automobiles so there is no wrong answer. It comes down to which marque stirs you the most. I'm a BMW guy but have always liked the old MB 300ce's. I think they have such great lines.
