F15 X5 Differential Fluid

Update 2/27/22:
As other's have pointed out the standard rear diff calls for the Hypoid G3. Just wanted to update this for future reference.

Front: 0.91L of Hypoid Axle Oil G2 (83-22-2-413-511) a service would require ordering 2 of this part number (500mL)

Standard Differential:
Rear: 0.91L BMW Hypoid Axle Oil G3 (83-22-2-413-512) a service would require ordering 2 of this part number (500mL)

Change it less often if you feel like is expensive, but buy the original oil...

Unless you tow, it's a waste. Well, may be worth changing in the front one, due to engine heat, and even then, every 100k and any synthetic 75W-90 (assuming regular diffs) is fine.

Is this for the basic diff or the the limited slip of the DHP? Or is there not a difference for lube? Haha

DHP requires 2 different fluids. Those I'd change as prescribed.

If you look up bmw part number for differential fluid, it comes back as 75w-85 gear fluid.
I ended up just buying lucas 75w-90 synthetic gear fluid available at all parts stores.
The one fluid that I did buy from bmw was the transfer case fluid. Since I couldn't find the specs on it. Charged me $50 a quart.

Mine has the M-sport package, so I believe it has a different differential than the basic diff (please correct me if I am wrong, I am still learning about this model). I think I may change the differential fluids here at around 60k miles with original BMW and check the condition of the old and adjust my frequency as needed.

M sport package is all cosmetic. No mechanical difference.

Redline is fine. Just remember, NS spec Redline is only for open diffs. Do not use in a limited slip diff unless you add the appropriate amount of friction modifier.

My differential appears to be a limited slip differential and I based it on your comment of the limited slip differential being on the DHP. Let me know if that is accurate.

On a separate note, can anyone help me determine the fill volume? Will I need to order 1L of each or 1.5L of each of the following fluids?

Front: Hypoid Axle Oil G2 - 500 mL (83-22-2-413-511)

Rear: BMW Final-Drive Gear Oil Carbon Mod SAE 75W-85 (83-12-0-445-832)

So I do not believe these are limited slip differentials... I had mistaken the carbon mod for the friction reducer in the differential oil that I use for my e92 M3 and assumed this one was a LSD too. And I was able to find the original window sticker to the car and I do not have the DHP package.

Just to wanted to give an update of what I was able to find out for future reference: I have a 2014 F15 X5 xDrive35d with the standard differential and looking to perform front and rear differential oil changes. The following fluids are the recommended fluids and capacities:

Front: 0.91L of Hypoid Axle Oil G2 (83-22-2-413-511) a service would require ordering 2 of this part number (500mL)

Rear: 0.91L BMW Hypoid Axle Oil G3 (83-22-2-413-512) a service would require ordering 2 of this part number (500mL)

I chose for now to stick with the BMW recommended fluids as I am still under CPO Warranty through 2020 that was purchased prior to me acquiring the vehicle and in the event of any issues with the differentials I do not want to risk voiding the warranty. I also intend to keep the vehicle far behind that and will examine the condition of the fluids here at 60k miles and determine my change intervals going forward based on the results.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Are you performing the fluids flush yourself or at dealership?

I was going to perform them myself while I do the transmission fluid and transfer case. I bought a bunch of the transfer pumps from harbor freight for $4.99. I just ordered the parts and will probably get around to it within the next month or 2.
