You won't get 400miles with 50i unless it's 100% highway, with cruise control set below 80mph in Eco mode.

Get about 310-320 if I keep it around 70 on my drive to work with mixed in city.

Get close to 400 if straight hwy but been awhile since I've done a long drive like that. Avg about 17 on a daily basis. 21-23 hwy with a RC mind you.

My 2014 F15 50i have 113k miles. Could it be because of the age and usage of the car and engine?

13ish

I drive mostly city, conservatively because it is a gas hog. Going from my M235i with stage2+ tune, to the 50i(stock setup) is a little harsh. My first tank of gas was about 250 miles on the tank. I swear you can watch the need go down, lol. The dashboard cruise range readout says I am going to go 450+miles on a tank, HA! Don't trust that thing, IDK how it does the math. Computer says I avg about 14mpg that times 22 is not 450+ miles on a tank.

Again I drive conservatively, and its 14. I haven't done any real hwy miles yet. Id expect on long hwy trip, 400 is doable if you set the cruise control for 70mph.

I drive about 1200-1500 miles a week, obviously mostly highway, but also includes DC, NY, and Boston traffic.

my 35i xdrive averages about 20.5 mpg

The worry is crossing the roads with all the traffic and oil field trucks roaring on them. I need to get up and go. Surprisingly, the 40e moves right along from the start. That electric motor provides the torque needed to get going where I was waiting for the 3.5 to spool up for me.

Thanks for all the responses to the thread! I appreciate it.
Diesel wipes the 40e in performance and efficiency. Solid 27 mpg average, 575-600 miles per tank normal driving with occasional hard acceleration. On my last road trip 32 mpg 720 miles per tank. And that low end diesel torque is plentiful to get it self outta sticky situation, and they don't depreciated as fast as the rest of the line up (excluding x5m). The diesel offers the best of both worlds efficiency and performance.
I get the same numbers with our 40e and the lack of turbo lag is nice since the electric motor gives you instant get up and go. It's just as fast as the 35i whitch is fine for what we need it for.

All the roads here are 35 and 45 mph and we work 6 miles from home and no highway. Cops every 100 feet it seems.... so no fun around these parts of Chicago.

Record I had with our work commute was a tad over 800 miles on a tank. Once our daughter is done with daycare then I think we can get away with pure electric driving. And use the gas when we go on road trips.

Diesel is fine but don't want the hassle of higher milage issues that come with diesel power later in life and also my short commute doesn't play well with diesel as it never would get to temp on such a short drive so the 40e works for my situation better than the diesel would. Everybody's story is slightly different so you can't just say it sucks. I also like the fact I can drive on pure electric power to work and back. Gives me a reason to use these solar panels! Not everyone has to have super car get up and go to be happy. .

Now the one thing that was a pleasant surprise on the 40e vs my other X5 models is that the preconditioning of the cabin is super nice, I can come out to a heated or air conditioned cabin depending on temp outside and don't need it idling for it to do so.

Sorry went off tangent their....

I avg 21mpg on Highway, 75-80mph in my previous gen 50i

I also have a Hyundai Santa Fe sport, it's almost 2000 pounds lighter, quite a bit smaller, and has half the engine (turbo 4 cylinder) and it averages 23.5mpg driven the exact same way. Pretty amazing the BMW is only off a few mpg a car so much smaller, lighter, and half the engine..

The 50i can get quite decent gas mileage if driven nicely...put your foot in it though and it's a thirsty beast...I have got as low as 11 In city when stepping on it and at 120+mph, you can actually watch the gas needle drop...

I get about 400 miles a tank on a 50i, mostly highway. Once I start doing city, maybe 325 a tank. I actually am purchasing a cheap hybrid for city trips.

Sounds like my '70 Cadillac Eldorado, with its 8.2 litre engine. I used to joke that it upshifted every 1/4 tank, and that it could pass anything except a gas station.

My x5 gets 18 mixed driving. Drive hard and it is about 15. Will be interesting to see if MPPK does anything to it. So far, it’s worse cause I keep testing her out. 😝

So I'm reviving an old thread, but with my 50i I'm getting 12mpg and that driving it with a light foot and perhaps a lead foot 3-4 times PER TANK.

Looking at getting my spark plugs looked at and possibly air filter because something looks wrong based on the posts in this thread!

I've had my 50i for about three weeks. Bought it here from the forum. Highway miles I get 400+ but city is killing the Tank, like one guy said I can literally see the needle going down. 200-300 is what I get in the City but man I absolutely love it

100K KM (60K miles) on my 2015 X5 35i M Sport gets about 9.5L/100KM (24.7MPG) in Eco on the Highway and our mixed city is around 10.5L per 100KM (22 MPG)

Tire pressure, spark plugs and air filters all contribute to fuel economy.

Are you taking into consideration that the US gallon is different than the Imperial gallon? Just asking because its not clear if you’ve adjusted for that difference. I believe 15 US gallons is about the same as 12.5 Imperial gallons (if rounded up).

Yup - I've been using this to do the conversion.

I have to say though it's not horrible. For such a heavy SUV and this much power that is. Coming from Germany I highly appreciate the gas prices in the US

35i here, and over the last 12 months, about 10k miles, i've averaged about 19mpg mixed driving, with it mostly being very short highway stints (2-7) miles at a time, with sitting in traffic getting onto and then off the highway ramps)...
