Third row seat spare tire
Probably a thread on this somewhere, but instead of going necro…
I have third row seats, so no spare tire storage; I replaced my runflats for regular tires a while ago and haven't looked back. Issue is I'm planning a 3000 mile road trip, so I bought a factory spare online and it's coming, but I'm wondering any suggestions on strapping this puppy down or what, mainly because it'll take up a lot of space (I also need room for snow chains, which also take up a bit of room) and some bit of luggage. Thanks in advance! |

Assuming you'll have the 3rd row folded, you can save some luggage space by standing the tire up. Get a set of wheel chocks to prevent it from rolling fwd/backward, then use the tie downs to prevent side-to-side movement.
Not the most elegant solution, but hey, it's an idea.

Thanks for the responses. I won't actually have the third row up. Sorry for the confusion. The problem I have with roof boxes is my garage is height limited and I don't have anywhere to store one.
I have no idea how big the spare is and the shipping is taking a while, and will only arrive the day before my trip. I want to have an idea of how I'm going to be putting stuff in the trunk hence the question. Currently liking the idea of the vertical storage, though I'm wondering where I would tie it down. Be honest I wish there was a way I could get rid of the third row seats since I never use them. I am also sort of entertaining the idea of perhaps renting a roof box? (I want to avoid the buy and return method). That would sort of defeat the point of my question, not to mention it won't do much if I suffer a blowout in the middle of nowhere, but thanks for your reply. |

Oh I remember those eyelets now. I removed them and put them in a box somewhere since I put a Weathertech cargo liner in and it doesn't have holes for the eyelets (well unless I cut holes).

+1 for the "stand up" solution. Again, not the most elegant, but its functional.

To be a bit more helpful, if you find yourself taking a lot of these trips and need to carry a spare, you can carry a full size spare on the rear. Australia BMW sells this one.

Thank you guys. In the end I ended up just keeping it in my trunk and then getting a roof box. Seemed like the best solution.
